is there anyway i can boost the signal of my linksys wireless g router so that i can recieve it a couple of houses away (about 6-7 terest houses away)
or is there a better way to position it
also is this legal?

You can buy high gain aerials, but your problem is still in the fact that wireless only really works well when there is "line of sight" between the access point & the receiver.
Things like brick walls kill the signal very quickly indeed.
We use a wireless router, its positioned downstairs behinde the telly, and me and my sister both get excellent signal strength in our rooms upstairs which is a fair few layers of brick and wood..
This is the one we have, maybe ya can buy high gain aerials as Pegasus said, but this is the one we use and it goes through a few layers or brick and might me able ot be moddified....

Yeh Id reccommend it to anyone! Best one ive come across at that price range!

check out the specs for the 13cm (band) antenna - very Hi Gain directional, says can be used on the 802.11b Wireless Network Band, connect 2 of these up, one on the nework sending device, one on the PC receiver card, align them up so they both point exactly at each other, & I'm sure you'd get very good range, even through brick walls etc, would even work better if both setups are in upstairs of house.
