Broadband (pointers Plz)

Am only on dial up,thinking off goin on BB,was looking for a few pointers as this downloading lark looks a bit confusing,any advice would be well recieved Eg,512 or 1Mb,
Which best provider?(opinions) I am with Virgin Net,I allready figured to change,looks like Pipex as good reviews,also read something about static ip's do i need one?Whats it all about.Also picked up that some ip's block certain type's of downloads. Obviously want to download the usual type of things.

i use pipex mate and i must say that i have had no trouble with them since being with them(6 months)never once has my line been down.read the reviews and see who looks good.good luck

I use Bulldog and Plusnet and not had any trouble at all with them.
