just got a new 80 GB hard disk installed. I can boot into XP & it's installed in the device manager but not detected by the BIOS or the windows explorer.
Any hints gratefully recieved as its driving me nuts.

Have you set the jumper setting correctly? Also, remove the BIOS battery for 30 sec's or so and try it again, see if that does anything.

is it partitioned and stuff?
is the bios set to detect it? sometimes they are set to only detect hard drives on the connectors that actually have hard drives as it is not nesessary to detect CD/dvd roms/writers at that point. if you add another drive without changing the settings it wont work

as per gunners post, check the jumper settings, I recently added a second drive which I now use as my boot drive. as my pc is really old I couldnt get to the old hard drive without resorting to serious screwdrive action which I could be bothered to do, so, keeping the jumpers incorrectly set, I switched the IDE cables around and set the new drive to boot first in the BIOS. there should be options for you to do this in the Boot section.
it takes a couple of seconds longer to check, but for hassle free I aint that bothered.

start-programs-administrative tools-computer managment-storage-disk managment ,you should now be able to see the drive click right on it assign it a spare drive letter,and unless iv'e forgotten something that should be it
