Default Copying music FROM Ipod to Hard drive banned to prevent music piracy

    http://www.sfbg.com/38/19/cover_noise_pirates.html

The iPod is a one-way music device: music files go in but don't come out. It's all part of Apple's digital rights management (DRM) scheme ironically known as Fairplay.

    What a load of bollocks.

So does this mean I can't copy tunes from my ipod back to my pc?

What if my ipod breaks. I'm only copying music I have paid for.

Also, iTunes only lets you make 3 copies :
If you buy music from the Apple iTunes store, which is what Steve Jobs hopes you'll do, you pay 99¢ for a song but can only copy it onto three computers. What if those computers become obsolete or unusable in a few years? Too bad – no more copies for you. Your music dies with your computers.

How long before someone finds a way around this?

    that is way off.

you can copy the music to any(as many) computers you want. But you can only play that music on FIVE computers.

As for only being able to burn a CD 10 times... You can burn any track an unlimited amount of times. But you can only burn a playlist 7 times. So if you swap 2 tracks around you can burn that another 7 times etc.. ie most people will not run into it unless you are copying and giving them to your mates.

As for the iPod of course you can't just copy music straight onto your mates computer. How would apple get any deals with music companies if you could?? But there are many programs to let you do this if you want to.

So I dont see the point of this article?

You de-authorise that computer and authorise your new one. Your music does not die with your computer, this guy doesn't have a clue

Method to extract tunes from iPod
The iPod's songs are stored in an invisible folder called iPod_Control. It lives at the root level of the iPod's hard drive. To reveal it on your Mac running Mac OS X, download a copy of Marcel Bresink's free TinkerTool.

    Open the TinkerTool System Preference.
Select "Show hidden and system files" in the Finder pane.
Press the Relaunch Finder button to invoke this option.

This procedure will reveal all invisible files on your Mac and iPod, including the iPod_Control folder. Open iPod_Control to reveal the songs on your iPod. To extract the songs, just drag the files to your Mac's hard drive.

    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html

So it seems it is very easy to get around it.

There must be a way for the PC aswell..

err, we are talking about itunes + iPod. It is exactly the same on PC/MAC.

This has nothing to do with an OS argument. :whistle

and that is why they call me twoplanks

fair enough if you're all using pcs, but still - if you werent using macintosh mp3 players then you wouldnt be having these problems

anyway i promised i wouldnt start another incredibly boring mac vs. pc argument so i wont. anyone who responds with anti-pc or anti-mac stuff will be getting a beating

most MP3 players from the big-name companies have the same simple systems in place.

for example sony net MiniDisc players have a checkout system to limit what you can do with your mp3's.

It doesn't sound like jo.cassady is having any problems anyway..?

if you select manual mode for the iPod you can then move songs back and forth from your computer as you want. Default is to auto-sync with your computer. Only restrictions are when you plug into someone else's computer.

There are quite a few third party apps for windows / mac that let you copy music back to your pc.

www.goggle.com - ipod software should do the trick.

What a lot of piss. How can they ever stop it.

I for one go round a mates house at least once a week with my ipod and take 10gb's of whatever the hell i fancy. (mostly porn tbh)

As long as the ipod can be used as a portable hdd there is no way of stopping the copying of music files.
On a side note, iTunes is shit anyway, i've found anapod to be much better. faster and easier to transfer songs

For the mac you don't need any software at all.

Simply load up a command console,
type in "cd " and then drag the ipod icon from the desktop to the window
It will auto-fill in everything else - press return,
you are now browsing your ipod.
It's not rocket science to find the tunes you want and execute a "cp " drag file " ~/music"
This copies it to your music folder.

    Simple

And another priceless contribution from the strange world of twoplanks. Have you decided to touch base in the real world yet?

I'm using a program called EphPod to copy the music off my iPod back onto my PC. Do a search on google for it.
