I've often heard (believe it or not, on American sci-fi programmes more than anywhere else) that a global unity is the only way to have complete peace and prosperity. Surely the onle way for the mankind to advance is as a whole?

I suppose a mixture of a unified military and world government. The programmes I referred to are the Star Trek series (I think they every race - including the Human race - have a single government and military) and Star Gate.

Star Gate probably more so because there are loads of situations where SG-1 come across another civilization that are too divided to ever make a decision and are often at civil war or dealing with terrorists (there are also a few terrorist story lines in Star Trek as well).

This isn't necessarily linked with a potential New World Order, just a new global identity.
