try your local motorbike dealer m8 as ours de-restricts mopeds from £25 notes.

when you do have a moped derestricted just bear in mind that you need a full motorcycle licence to ride it and you need to tell your insurance company.
just recently a kid that i trained came into my shop telling me that he had been stopped by the police because he seemed to be going a bit quick - they didnt even clock him doing more than 30mph, them confiscated his bike and tested its power output, he is going to court shortly charged with driving without a valid insurance policy ('cos he insured a bog standard restricted moped, not a derestricted one) and driving otherwise in accordance with a driving licence.

his solicitor said he will get a minimum of £500 fine and will have a suspended ban placed on his licence - i.e. he will be banned for a time AS SOON AS HE PASSES HIS DRIVING TEST.

    just food for thought!!!!!

the met police are even hiring mobile dyno testers and testing the power of bikes riden by restricted licence holders (cant ride bikes that make more than 33bhp for 2 years after test pass)

    yes,
    in freefall maybe!!!!!

seriously though, a realistic top speed (ignore speedo's they lie) for a derestricted 50cc would be about 45-50mph but the engine would last about 4000 miles maximum.

speedo's do lie, i once rode a TTS dyno tuned supercharged hayabusa at bruntingthorpe proving ground, the speedo registered 220mph, MCN's timing lights an on-board datalogger and a gps groundspeed logger calculated a max speed of 196.8mph

    Don't you believe it mate.

In my early days of biking, I had a Yamaha FS1-E that gave me an indicated 71mph before it decided to hole the piston.

Whether it was doing that in reality is another story altogether, but it certainly wasn't far off it.

Of course to reach that sort of speed the engine had been modded a little, as well as the gearing being modified (made it slower on pull away), but it was still 49cc.

You will if you have it derestricted.

As already stated you have to hold a full licence to ride it.

If you get caught you will have a heafty fine and no licence for about 2 years at best.

You have to have a car license to ride a 50 cc moped on L plates I beleive. Tiggerbiker will confirm. You cannot ride a moped on just a provisional car license.

You can ride a 50cc moped with just a provisional licence. You must hold a full licence to have it derestricted tho.

you must have a provisional licence and a cbt to ride a (restricted)moped on the road,

if you had a full car licence issued before feb. 2001 then you would have a full moped licence, i.e. no cbt needed, no 'L' plates needed and you could take passengers but the bike must be no bigger than 50cc and develop no more than 5kw (i think) also the bike must not be too heavy either.

you, unfortunately, need to have your provisional licence and you need to do a CBT course before doing anything else.

I'm amazed that anybody bothers riding a bike these days with all the hoops they have you jumping through just to get a full license.

I was quite lucky in my day that all I had to do was ride around the block for 30 minutes, answer a few questions at the end and that was it.
