Weird FTP Xbox transfer speeds are messed up

Okay, for the past while now when transfering files from Xbox to PC or vice-versa, my speeds are screwing up, example when I transfer a whole load of files I will get 7mb per sec and then it will drop to maybe 100k etc, also what happens is when transferring multiple files, some while transfer and then there is a pause of 10-20 seconds before more files transfer, the cycle just keeps repeating itself.

The other day I transferred Xbox Media Center V1.0, there was roughly 1500 files, roughly 25-35 meg in total, it took 20 mins to transfer, that aint right.

What the hell is going on, Im using FlashFXP. Ive uninstalled my NIC and re-installed, tried a newer version of FlashFXP, still no job.

    any help.

    Ta

Ok, could be a few reasons for this.
I have noticed that sometimes the transfer can be slow if the files are small .wav ones. Try transferring World Champ Snooker 04 and you will see what I mean.
Also, check the settings on the XBox and the PC NIC. Make sure that they are both set for Full Duplex rather than Half Duplex. You will need to right click on the LAN connection, go to 'Configure' for the card and then to 'Advanced'. In the list you will find the option for 'Duplex'. If it is set as 'Hardware default' then obviously this will either be half duplex or full, depending on the card.
Have you recently installed a hub between the XBox and PC? If so, makesure you didn't get your hands on a 10Mb one rather than a 100Mb. Most new switches are autoswitching so will go from 10Mb/100Mb depending on the NIC connected to the PC and XBox.
Also, are you using a wireless Lan? The above problem can occur if the wireless adaptor in the back of the XBox is slow. I bought one that was only 14Mb and pretty much damn useless for transferring files between the 2. Supposed to be ok for Live but I can't be arsed if I have a 100Mb router to plug the 2 into.

Let me know how you get on.

Oh, and another thing. If you are running Norton Security or even just the firewall, try disabling that before transferring the files across. That can cause problems sometimes and I've only really noticed it with 2004 version.
If the PC is getting blitzed with loads of small files, Norton thinks that it is a DOS attack and will block it. Again, try transferring WCS2004 from the XBox to PC to see what I mean.

My NIC is set to Full Duplex. And I always turn off my firewall before transferring files, even the Windows XP Firewall is disabled.

This is weird how this is doing it. I'll just have to put up with it for the time being.

    Ta anyways

I gave up on Flash FXP a long while ago.
Try Ipswitch WS FTP and see if that makes any difference.

pretty common I have 4 boxes and the speed differences fluctuate massively across them all.

Flash is terrible as well by the way stick to WS FTP.

And your right the smaller the files the slower the transfer.

run avalaunch on the xbox and the ftp speeds are usually greatly increased, i usually get 4 meg with evox, well over 7 meg a sec with ava
speeds do vary with small/large files tho, as said above

    Rubbish!!
    Not for me it's not!!

I am using FlashFXP Version 2.1 (Build 921) (The one you don't need to install :thumbs )
I can transfer a 702Mb DivX in about 58 seconds and get around 11,400KBps!

I also have a few friends that use it for FTP'ing to and from their Xbox's and although they don't quite get the same blistering speed I do (might be because they don't have an expensive Gigabit LAN) they still get between 9,000 & 10,000KBps.

No too bad for a program that you don't even need to install :thumbs

I use avalaunch and flash and Im getting blistering speeds - minimum of 9mb right up to 14. Usually levels off around the 10 or 11 meg mark.

Sometimes if im connected to the net and ftp'ing at the same time the speed drops off but its not that much of an issue.

Boost mode ftp is the way to go - thanks avalaunch

I FTP from my XP to laptop straight in the XBOX using windows XP's FTP (right click the network icon on the desktop) and choose map network drive and choose "sign up for online storage......" much easier and faster - never failed for me so far
