networking and remote desktop

i have a paptop and a pc both have network cards bought network cable how do i make them come together ie how can i use both on same dsl modem and file share

To use 1 cable to link 2 pcs together you need a crossover cable, spec on that are notice the Orange and green pairs are swaped round.

After that you need to set up the pcs with individual computer names
Laptop and Workstation are good
The workgroup name needs to be the same on both pc's
Win 9X in network properties
Win2k/XP my computer properties

You then need to specifiy Ip addresses and a Subnet mask
Workstation 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.248
Laptop 192.168.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.248

Once this is done you can then share files between the 2 pc's right click the drive of folder then go into sharing

sharing the internet connection can be done with internet connection sharing in windows. not very good but it will work for somethings

Your best option would be to get a proxy server software or a Router witha built in hub if you can so there is no need for the crossover cable and you can just plug both pc's in to the router.
