The Duke might finally be BACK!!!

Duke Nukem: Forever might be making an appearance as the 1st title to use the DOOM 3 engine. :thumbs

For those of us oldies who remember Duke Nukem back in the day this is great news!!! Along with the origional Dark Forces and Quake, this was my favourite game and nothing really have come close since (other than perhaps Serious Sam)...

Always thought that The Rock should be cast to play this character in a big budget film!!

It would be nice if it did happen but i've give up waiting for DnF now, hasn't it already gone through 3 engine changes (didnt they start off in-house, then quake2 then unreal2 or something like that?). The game's been discussed and shown off for the past crikey, who knows, 6 years or something and still nothing concrete.

It's a shame they just didnt get off their arses and release it when they were at e3 in 2001 and had all the demos of it. Guess they felt they needed another engine change.

Perhaps we'll see it when quake4 appears and they chagne to that engine

God yeah id love it if this did happen, im another duke fan, used to love playin dukey, even like the psx one tho it wasnt as good as the pc game.

yup, agree, duke was my game of choice for ages, i used to scan the internet for extra levels, then came serious sam and the fun started again.

Having sat through the torture of a Take2 investor meeting audio file earlier today one of the more interesting things that came up was a Take2 employee having a few things to say about Duke Nukem Forever in development over at 3DRealms. There was this one zinger by Rich Roedel, the CEO of Take2:

"...they are using the DOOM3 technology now which is finished"

This was a simple mistake by Rich that just snowballed a little... So since it seems that this was picked up elsewhere as factual we've got an official statement from 3DRealms to clear things up. Here ya go:

"I guess I need to clear up some confusion. We are not using the Doom 3 engine for Duke Nukem Forever.

That said, I'd also like to take a moment to point out something about the gaming press. Very few people ever even try to contact you for fact checking, like Gamespot did. When they ran the story about the engine change, they ended it with "Attempts to contact 3D Realms for comment were unsuccessful as of press time." The news story was posted 35 minutes after I received an e-mail from them requesting confirmation.

Gamespot, I apologize. Your e-mail came in at 10:04pm and I was working elsewhere in the building. I will try to be more accessible to you in the future."

There you go. George actually confirmed here on Shacknews at the end of May that 3DRealms has their own 100% from scratch rendering engine. Also, here's an mp3 of the call if you're really curious.

3D Realms boss George Broussard has responded sarcastically to suggestions that Duke Nukem Forever will make use of the Doom III engine, after Take-Two CEO Rich Roedel mistakenly said as much in a financial conference call yesterday.

"I guess I need to clear up some confusion," Broussard told Shacknews. "We are not using the Doom III engine for Duke Nukem Forever." This came after Roedel, answering questions from analysts about the game, said: "The 3D Realms guys continue to work. They are using the Doom III technology, which is finished. They are a premier developer, but they certainly believe in no line before it's time."

Should Be good when it finally appears, from what i had heard tho it was gonna use the Half-Life 2 engine rather than the Doom III One.... Always rumours tho i suppose.

Duke Nukem Forever gets physical
At this rate Duke Nukem Forever will be out before Half-Life 2.

First person shoot ‘em-ups never tend to have a terribly good relationship with the concept of release dates, but quite frankly we’re still not convinced Duke Nukem Forever actually exists. Work has been underway on the game for the best part of a decade and yet we haven’t had a new screenshot in three years.

What we have had lately though is lots of talk of the game using such-and-such graphics engine (both Doom 3 and Unreal Engine 3.0 have been mentioned but never confirmed). Now though, developer 3D Realms have announced that they’ve signed up the Meqon physic engine to use in the game.

Not as famous as the Havok engine used in titles such as Half-Life 2 and Mercenaries, 3D Realms nevertheless claim that Meqon is “really fast, had the cleanest interface and integrated into our game very quickly.” By using this engine it means that 3D Realms don’t have to program their own physics into the game, which should save them precious months of development… no doubt ensuring the game will be out well before the end of the millennium.

I read a while ago that they denided the Doom3 engine and it was an in house Engine.
