The secret to this one is a bit of time and patience and the magnetic lasso tool.
Also there's a bit extra involved to this than I've already mentioned. Just desaturating the image and converting it to greyscale didn't produce and B&W background that I was happy with.
A much better method is this.
1. Create an adjustment layer - hue/saturation - and change the overlay method from Normal to Color.
2. Next create another adjustment layer - hue/saturation - in this one set saturation to 0. Leave the overlay method as Normal
3. Now go back to the first hue/saturation adjustement layer and open up the dialog box, play around with the hue til you get an effect you like.
The key to photoshop is understanding layers - if you can get your head round that you're laughing
take a look at www.good-tutorials.com if you want lots of tutorials on manipulating your pics - really good resource

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level, then beat you with experience.
There is a 9CD Total Training Guide on SN at the moment. I have seen a Total Training guide before and they are excellent.

For anyone with a digicam I can also recommend the Photoshop for Photographers guide on SN.
Another method for creating better B&W is to use the Channel Mixer as it allows more control.
1. Open your image.
2. Select Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer.
3. Check the Monochrome box.
4. Play around with the RGB sliders until you achieve a pleasing result.
Ideally you want the sliders to still total 100%. Eg. Red 50%, Green 50%, Blue 0%.
photoshop is a hard program to grasp but once you have grasped it their endless fun i especially like playing with the blood brushes, the main way to learn photoshop and do something creative is to create a dvdcover for a movie which aint in cinema or something this will push your skills to the limit you have to make it profesional but still add your own effect 1 man that does this well is
