I was informing about the availability of service pack 2 from windows update. :whistle
hi,
yep i have just installed the update on my main pc from the windows website, and now it wont boot up.
It gets the the windows xp splash screen and the progress bar just stops and thats it....
so my impression of the windows sp2 upgrade is not good, has anyone got any ideas what i can do to get it to boot???
Thanks alot
BP
I take it that everything is original :whistle ie. no fake cd key's etc etc....?Originally Posted by bulletproof
Well it should work with a fake serial. Have you got an AMD 64 processor because there is a problem with sp2 and these processors at the moment according to micro$oftOriginally Posted by bulletproof
more liable to be corrupt download as we would all be in the same boat, boot to safe mode and system restore to the point before the s2 update, then try it againOriginally Posted by bulletproof

hi fella's,
thanks alot for all the help i will give it a try.
the copy of windows xp - home edition is a genuine one which i bought from scan a couple of years ago. and my processor is a pentium 4 3ghz hyper threading.
I did try safe mode, but after choosing it it then listed all the drivers from the windows folder on teh screen and locked up....
I think i'am buggered, any other clues of how to get this running without a reformat again, and i will have to ring microsoft because i have installed it to many times already for a new cd key.
Thanks alot
BP

Word of warning, SP2 needs 1.8gig to do it's install??. I forgot I only had 1gig of space left when I went to install it, it stopped about half way through, message came up saying insufficient disk space and could not continue. Once I clicked cancel as it had locked the menu's etc so I couldn't delete anything to make space. the message came up saying that SP2 couldn't complete and windows may not work....lol, it was right, it rebooted and would load so far then would restart.
quick repair later all was well again.

Umm, Bulletproof, if you have the cd, boot the puter as though doing a clean install, once it gets to the stage where it asks where you want to install it will tell you that your system already has an OS and ask if you want to repair or delete the OS. Click on repair and it will just repair so you won't loose any of your settings.
hope this helps

i downloaded this & my PC went so slow & took ages to do anything so restored it to an earlier date
Hi,
I had a client who had tried to install sp2 while offline
His machine locked in the same way.
We used a bootdisk to reinstall his original version of xp over the top of the new installation and this worked whilst still keeping all his old programmes working.
Give it a go.
You may need to borrow a boot disk for xp if you didn't make a startup disk.
Hope it works out.
