    Help help with a cable problem:/

    right im trying to fix a laptop psu but i need to cut a wire or 3 up and resodler them (easy job) but the problem is im happy to cut it up but just before the plug bit theres a long clinder shape thingy.....what is it for??

    am stuck till i can figure this out

    I think the long black cylindrical thingy bit you refer to is a ferrite ring and is there to reduce Rf emissions from the lead - or to stop it picking them up! I dont think its essential but it is usually needed for CE compliance, lots of stuff that never had these on the leads now have them fitted.
