Laser Printer Toner

Hi,
Just bought a cheapish new laser printer to use for uni work, so I'm not pissing about with a bloody inkjet all the time! Anyway, the printer comes with only a "test" toner cartridge, which they say will print to 1000 sheets (5% coverage) and then after that it can print about 3000 sheets per toner (5%). The toner cartridge can either be replaced or it can be re-filled.
What I was wondering, is laser toner simply just laser toner. - ie. if I wanted to re-fill my cart, would I have to buy the same toner as recommended by them? The reason I am asking is that at work we have about 6 toner refils for an old photocopier that is now broken. Would I be able to use these on the laser printer? It's just that they are no use to anyone, so I thought it would be better putitng them to good use rather than just throwing them out. As far as I can see, there can't be that much difference between one toner and another!

i tried this a while back with a laser printer and some odd toner i found and in all honesty i wouldn't reccomend it
there are different types / grades of toner for different printers / photocopiers i think it has to do with how course the toner is the highr resolution the printer the finer the powder and photo copiers tend to be quite low resolution

if the price of the reccomended toner is cheap enough just buy it as it lasts fo ever anyway
