Cant Delete Some Files In Xp

Ok heres my problen, say theres a file anywhere on my computer called
"abc.dfg" for example if i right click on that file or highlight the file and press delete windows explorer will crash. In order to delete these files i have to use a 3rd party shredding program to get rid of them. This only happens with some files on my computer other files can be deleted normally.

Ive tried cleaning the registery, adware scans, virus scans and updates from MS (including sp2) to no avail if anyone knows a solution to this please reply.

Any sort of files there entension does not matter it gets really annoying when i download stuff from the internet onto my desktop i dont need em any more goto delete them and explorer crashes :grr:

I think if may be a bad XP install but i dont really want to reinstall it as im not the only user of this PC

You might find that some other prog is using them ( not that you want it to ), but you can delete them in safe mode. There is a reg hack (was posted on this forum sometime ago) for an XP bug that stops you deleting avi's if you have previously tried opening them - something to do with XP checking them for integrity and forgetting to stop!!

do i delete the whole string or just the contents?

nope that didnt work lucky i backed up my registry tho cus after deleting that string my sound no longer worked think ill have to reinstall XP and format my drive later it needs to be done anyway

Sorry if my suggestion caused you probs, I had this 'cant delete' prob quite a while ago and that solution worked for me, it seems XP tries to validate any AVI files you try to open and continues for long after you have forgotten about it !! After a reboot, if you didnt try to open the file, you could delete it then. Removing that line in the reg cured it for me, fortunately you were sensible and backed up the reg first.
