Default Aligning dish / LNB questions

    Hi,
I am just getting started with satellite and so my knowledge is pretty poor. Anyway my first question is how difficult is it to align a dish myself? I have bought a 'satellite finder' off ebay to help me although it does look pretty crap. Would I be better off getting a professional to install the dish? I am probably going to have it pointing at 19e.

My second question is can I use my old analogue Sky dish/LNB for getting digital sat? I have had a little play at trying to get a reception with it but have so far failed.

    Thanks for the help,
    JMC

At the moment a fixed dish, although I could be tempted to get a motorised one.

First of all find your longitude, and let me know,it will be easier to explain how to align the dish towards Astra.

    To find your longitude:

no your old sky anolog dish will not pick up digital because it has an anlog lnb
maybe you could replace with a digital lnb.

Info Re: Aligning dish / LNB questions

Low Noise Block-downconvertor (so called because it converts a whole band or "block" of frequencies to a lower band).

The LNB converts the signals to a lower frequency and sends them out to the cable connector, which you connect to your satellite receiver via coaxial cable.

A Universal LNB requires a 22kHz signal at 0.5v p-p to switch its Local Oscillator to 10.6GHz ("high band"). Otherwise it uses its 9.75GHz oscillator ("low band").

Yur dish should be fine as long as its not got surface rust on or is damaged in any way , ie big dents/scratches and min of 60cm diameter , 80cm would be good or if you can a 1m dish.

If looking for a new LNB i recommend a 0.3db which cn be picked up for about £20

http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/lnbs.htm is a usefull site ( i have no association with these at all just passing on a link )

Thanks. I've gone for a 80cm dish, so hopefully it should all be good now. Just waiting for the thing to turn up.

Thanks for the all the help so far. No doubt I will need more once I have sorted the basics out.

Dreambox 5620S. I've managed to install the image, but until I have the new dish/LNB I have yet to see if it is all sorted properly.

Sorry for the delay, first try to find the Thor satellite at 1 West, bring up the menu>manual search>select Thor satellite>input the freqence 11422 H 24500 7/8,and move the dish East/West until you get a full signal (check the signal bar in the menu)and download the channel(s) afterwards bring up the menu again, select Astra satellite at 19,2 East input 12051 V 27500 3/4 and move the dish towards East untill you get a full signal (check the signal bar) download the channels.

    Good luck
