    Question A Quick Question.

My ps2 has decided to give up the ghost over xmas, just when I got some time to have a good crack at gta:sa. :annoyed:

I have been advised that it may be the laser guide arm thats gone, so while i'm taking it apart I thought I might as well clean the laser as well.

The quick question is can I use a alcohol wipe to clean the laser? :cartman

This where i'm at now, I wonder if any fine fellows on her can help.
When I try 2 load a game or dvd movie it goes to the browser screen all the time.

I have taken my ps2 apart, you will have to excuse my descriptions as I am no expert.
Firstly I cleaned the laser with a cotton wool bud and everywhere else I could see dust and dirt.

Whilst my ps2 is apart this is what happens:
When I start the ps2 the laser pops down then up, the laser shines then moves back down (the laser is no longer shining), and the spindle what you put the discs on spins for a few seconds then stops (this is with no disc in).

The laser seems to move smoothly enough. The noise I could hear when i first power the ps2 up is a bar with a spring around it (to the right of the laser,if u are looking at the ps2 from the front), that what I can gather ejects and pulls the disc tray in and out.

Now when I try it with a disc in (first I tried a dvd then a cd and finally a dvd movie), it goes to the browser screen still, but if I leave it, it eventually gives me the option of memory cards or ps2 disc or movie. I selected game and the ps2 logo appears and the game starts to load, but it stuggles to load the game and I have long periods of nothing then it kicks into life and then struggles to load the next part.

It is same with movies, the movie starts then freezes etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Yeh its proberly the arm, or if your unlucky it could be the laser, so might be a new one, but sounds to me like it worth replacing that arm first.

Yes I am known on a few boards as Ps2solutions, I would have thought that if it was the arm it would still be making a buzzing sound if it was jumping the Laser slead, but you can find them here for £5.00 hXXp://www.consoleparts.co.uk/ps2REPAIRS.htm or on ebay cheaper but you got to trust them and there may be delivery charge

have you tried to bend the plastic laser slead arm over a little this will stop it jumping out, for a short while , also adjusting the azimuth screw on the laser a little to lift the laser may help, but not to tight or this again will cause the arm to stick

Have you got A sony or Sanyo laser fitted have you checked the readings of the potts and coils with a multi meter

Mods if I am not aloud to put links to any sites sorry and please remove
