PC Locks up via USB Modem (Win ME)

Has nayone got any ideas please?

I have been using ME for some years now and have had very few problems. A few days ago my PC jsut stopped responding to anything. Having unplugged the USB Speedtouch 330 modem I found that the PC worked, so I tried to install it on an old pC that worked before and found I had the same problem. So hence thought is was the modem was the problem.

I got a new modem today and have tried numerous bits to get it running. I then formatted my HD and installed everthing again :-( and still have the same problem.

If I unplug the modem via the usb port the pc is fine. When it's plugged it 8/10 times it just freezes, when I unplug the unit it carries on working. If the PC is switched off and I plug the modem in she hangs at after verifying DMI on boot up, just unpug the modem and she works fine. I have read that this is a ME problem but have had no problems before (2 years)

I have downloaded the latest drivers and ME updates.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
When you say ME, you are talking about Windows Millenium Edition?
If the answear is yes, the solution is very simple: trow it away!
Its the worst operative system ever made. Upgrade to XP or use a Win 98 2d edition that is much better.

ME seems OK and it has been reliable for some years. Not prepared to pay 75 squid for xp as ME does the job. Not sure what the problem is as all was fine until a few days ago.

Or for a more productive answer, have you checked for an IRQ conflict in Device Manager?

I've checked for conflicts in system manager and have checked the cmos settings and all seems fine. I havent changed anything, just stopped working for no reason? I have nothing else installed on the pc other than a CDROM, floppy, ATI graphics card and the bloody modem.

I have installed fail safe settings at bios and performance setting and have the same problem.

Have you any other ideas?

If you have access to a friend with a different Make / Model of ADSL modem see if you can borrow it to try. I've come across this before more than once with a Win98SE machine again running a Speedtouch 330 but reinstalling the OS always sorted it out.

do you plug the modem directly into the usb port on the pc or through a usb hub ?
if a usb hub is it powered or does it take from the pc ?

i have seen this problem but only through a non powered usb hub

answer to this particular problem was to plug the power lead back into the usb hub ( they hadn't noticed it had come out ) but if your plugging directly into the pc i'm not sure what the problem is

Hi Guys

The unit is plugged directly into a usb port. I have no conflicts and have reinstalled everything.
When I switched her on she just sticks at "verfying DMI Pool Data Update Success" If I unplug the modem (various ports tried) she works fine.

I dont know anyone who else who has an adsl modem so I cant try swapping it over. It seems strange that I have two and the problem is the same.

is there anything else plugged into the other USB port on the same bus ?
modems are known to have isses if they share a usb bus with anything else. normally loss of sync but it might be causing your problem too ?
try unplugging any other USB devices that arent essential for you to use as well just to see

I have nothing else plugged into the USB ports I have even swapped the modem from port to port and still have the same problem.

I noticed tonight that the pc hung at "verifying dmi data" I then unplugged the modem and all was fine?

I have now flashed the BIOS and changed the power supply and still have the same problem. Does anyone have any other ideas?
