    Default AMD Athlon 64

Rite guys this has me flummoxed

was gonna build a new system, i upgrade about 3 times a year (coz im insane) anyway i was gonna get an athlon 64 coz i thought they were boss and ded fast and sh1t.

anyway went to toms hardware to read up on them and saw this
Other than lacking the 64-bit instruction set and some cache, the Sempron is the equal of the Athlon 64 in every way. AMD's starter platform with Socket 754 is well-suited as an upgrade option as it is both affordable and good for overclocking
now this has me totally stumped coz i thought semprons were budget cpu,s and replacements for the duron and nowhere in the athlon 64 league.

    My system now is

    Asus A7N8X-E-Deluxe board
    AMD Athlonxp 2600+
    1024meg of Crucial DDR400
    Radeon 9800Pro

so guys would it really be worth my while upgrading to an athlon64, was thinkin about 3200+, would i actually see any difference u reckon??

as usual any ideas would be really appreciated

    cheers

bull the Sempron is 32 bit and the over of coars is 64 ,Sempron has 256 creche ,64 has 512+
64 is in Competition with intel p4 ect and the Sempron is in Competition with celeron .the Sempron 3100 754 is nealy as fast as the 2800 64 bite put all over 64 leave it for dead.so how said that a Sempron is better than a athlon 64 they must live in cockoo land or clowd 9

well the cpu in my sig blows the pants off my other p4 2.4ghz and if u went socket 939 u could run dual channel and will be even faster again, wouldnt get sempron, waste o money compared to the price of a lower end athlon64

yeah i was gonna get a socket 939 winchester 3200 m8 and an nforce chipset motherboard with the dual channel ram thing, but i wanna get the retail boxed one and not an oem.

so u reckon its worth upgrading the system i already got, just worried if i spend all that cash and dont really notice much diff ill be gutted

64 will come into it's own when 64 bit software is released if i were upgrading at the mnoment i would go 64 rather than any 32bit cpu
:kissass  Hmm I wonder which 3 this is ????

I have an AMD 64-Bit at the moment, think its great - Tried Overclocking and I managed to boot into Windows at 2800Mhz or so, with sufficiant cooling and such like using an Overclocking program, it worked - only thing was Windows became very unstable and the next time I rebooted up it had some how screwed half my system files up, I contacted someone and he said booting up with an unstable CPU frequency can damage windows.
I think its good, I probably have dented my 64's life, but im not going to overclock - I think its fast, I think its great. Im also running Windows XP 64-Bit edition, (x64) which can be downloaded from Microsoft's Website for free, only thing is the trial is 365 days long, I think there is a crack for it - but im not sure.

The Sempron 3100+ is great at overclocking and you can get it to outperform MOST 64 Athlon chips and P4 out there. Id wait until there is a suitable amount of software able to actually use the 64bit function properly, by then the price of the 64's will be cheaper...

    thats just me though!!

so you would buy a 32bit chip now knowing in the next few months you are going to buy a 64 bit chip :nowords: you must have loads of money yes it will out perform if you overclock but how long will it last, and if you over clock the 64 then it outperforms your sempron so you are right back at square one.

Hey man, Well I tried that but it had already damaged some \SYSTEM32\BOOT\ files, just threw errors at me all the time when I tried rebooting, I tried it so many times my BIOS reported that my Overclocking Failed, so I reset BIOS but it made no difference.

Windows XP 64-Bit and my processor has some sort of emulinator for 32-bit applications, so 32-Bit applications can run on both Windows XP 64-Bit edition and be processed by my processor, of course.

Im back on Windows XP Professional after I reformatted not long ago though so its A'OK

so even tho there isnt any 64 bit programs to run yet, its still worth upgrading my 2600+xp chip ive got now the new system SHOULD be faster then??.

am i right in thinking that i have to get top end ram like corsair twinx or kingston or something, im using crucial ram now, think ill just see if my ram does work before buying a gig of new stuff.

    anyway cheers guys

should be ok but check compatability as you will need a new motherboaed to go with the 64 cpu

yeah ill have to check once i decide on a board.

i always get crucial ram, they have a thing on the site that lets you match the ram to the board and they gaurentee it to work or your money back, plus i think the ram has a lifetime warrenty, anyway ive never had a problem with crucial ram, just hope its good enough for an athlon 64 board

    get Patriot RAM
    very stable at high speeds

get this stuff and you will fly and be ready for the next year or so

NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset is the King right now
but....you will need a Pci express 16 video card for this. if that doesnt work for ya then substitute this motherboard
