The "best" emu all depends on the game really, some games play better on one type of emu as opposed to the other.
Goldeneye (for example) works very well on 1964, but doesn't respond that well on Ultra HLE or Project 64.
i found project 64 works pretty sweet compared to others

Pegasus Team's answer isn't actually that relevant for the Xbox since the well regarded best emulator is Surreal 64. As this is actually just a front for putting Ultra HLE, Project 64 and 1964 together (with automatic selection of the 'best' emulator for each game) all you really need to do is get Surreal 64 and the rest is history.
I got Surreal and some revised update but had to tweak some settings for the controller before I felt it was accurate and felt like an n64 controller. By the end the stick worked better than on the n64, seriously. If you feel you have the same problem when you run it drop me a pm.
I use the Surreal emulator too. Games are hit and miss though. Neither Goldeneye or Perect dark are playablle because of framerate and controlissues and Conkers Bad Fur Day completely locks up the Xbox. I got my version of surreal Sept 04. Any newer better versions come out since then?
My answer was completely relevant....the OP asked what the best emulator was, not what the best front end was.Originally Posted by Porthos
Having Surreal 64 won't help in the slightest if you don't have the actual emu's themselves.
The emu's are included with Surreal and the best performing emulator for each individual rom pre chosen. Since he was looking to play 'NBA hangtime and golden eye' again I think Surreal gives him the answer for the best download to emulate n64 games. I don't think he just wanted to know out of interest which one was the best lol.
You can personally guarantee that EVERY single available download of Surreal out there includes the emu's can you?Originally Posted by Porthos
Yes.
Would you like to have a small wager on that Porthos?
PS
Think very carefully now before you answer
Listen mate, I don't know why you take this so personally, the guy asked a question and I gave him the answer he needed. Surreal comes with a dedicated xbe for each of the emulators you mentioned so how or why it would be released without them I don't know. You seem to be convinced that just getting Surreal won't solve his problem completely so jayc drop me a pm if you want Surreal mate (with all the emulators!). Pegasus show me where to get Surreal without the emulators please, I am intrigued
I never said that at all....the question was "what is the best emu" and that question was answered.Originally Posted by Porthos
You then come along, claim my response is irrelevant, and go on to say that the best emu is Surreal. In the very next breath, you contradict yourself by saying that Surreal isn't an emu at all (which it isn't).
Haha you're like a little baby!
Erm I explained in the first post that it is a front end for 3 different emulators? How much more simply would you like it to be put?You then come along, claim my response is irrelevant, and go on to say that the best emu is Surreal. In the very next breath,
You and I know the difference between an emulator and a front end (as I showed in my first post above), I was just trying to help the guy play his old games. If you interpreted his post as a technical knowledge question to find out which emulator was technically the best then you should re-read it, it's pretty obvious he wants the best solution to play some old skool games... and my explanation was still better (as 909 kindly confirmed) :tonguePegasus Team's answer isn't actually that relevant for the Xbox since the well regarded best emulator is Surreal 64. Right children.
Stop fighting & get back to the original point of this thread.
How is the best way for him to play these old skool games on his box.
I'm sure thats all he needs to know!
There may be more than one way
"Friendly fire will not be tolerated"
lol like I said that was my aim from the beginning. And like I said in my first post, Surreal is the answer without a doubt. So there we have it jayc, enjoy your games mate! :thumbsOriginally Posted by Pegasus Team (from a different thread)
I took your advice people and got surreal-xxx so when you pick a rom it gives you the choice of 3 emulators to run the game. It has a star on the correct emulator to pick most of the time, but when it doesnt on some games i cant seem to get them to work?? Do they just not work :nowords:

AFAIK support across the 3 emulators is very good now so I'm a bit surprised at this. What games are they? Are they fairly well known? Generally emulator development crews like to get the biggest games working first but since development isn't that hot there now I'm surprised the support doesn't cover nearly all games.
i am getting that problem on a lot of games, mario golf, southpark, waverace are just a few, maybe its just my roms are corrupt??
