When I click the shutdown button, I get the Windows is shutting down prompt, but it takes nearly a minute to power off.
Is there anyway to speed up the process.

Hi,
has always been like that? any recent HW or SW adds? I had a problem with my laptop, except it was the booting up after the network login, I could figure out what it was so I had to use System Restore, fixed my problem.
EDITED: On the other hand it could be this, the HOTFIX bit.

“If I asked you to have sex with me, would the answer to that question be the same as the answer to this question?”
Well for a few days after a clean install of Windows XP SP2 integrated it would shut down quickly, but then it went from fast shutdown to slow.
I'll checkout that link anyway

If you can afford the disk spcae, create a restore point of the current settings. And then just to check it, roll back to an earlier one.
Also see here "SHUTDOWN WORKS, BUT IT’S REAL SLOW"

Hmmm, maybe the Nvidia thing is causing it, I'll disable it.
This could be a case of when windows is shutting down it is writing over the swap file ( i remeber there is an option to do this) .
checking on MS here is a link which might help

This refers to How to Clear the Windows Paging File at Shutdown.
I suspect this might be the case here and hence will take alot longer than normal.
In the link , it point to replacing the reg entry with a 1 (this is to clear it) . Hopefully this is what you have at present (as this might explain why it is taking some time. If it has a 0 , then I might suggest leaving it alone.
do a search in google for "clearing pagefile during shutdown" without the comma for some useful suggestions.
