    windows 98 doesnt have versions as such.

    there have been 2 editions. just make sure you have the second edition (called Windows 98 SE usually) installed.

    infact, scratch that, win98 is a pile. get xp/2k on it instead.

    It does actually, there was Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. Although they were the same basic operating systems SE did have some changes, not that I can remember what they were tho. Might have been something to do with USB. :nowords:

    I do agree that it is pretty shit and 2k or XP would be a better choice if your hardware will run it.

    i would have thought an edition was different from a version (in that there are usually many many versions, but only a few actual 'editions'). but wtf do i know. :whistle

    i dont think the windows 98 versions/editions had anything to do with usb, but windows 95 didnt support it and windows 95 osr2 did. osr2 also supported fat32 and other such windows 98 stuff.

    Win 98 had 2 different version numbers...

    Win98 - 4.10.1998

    Win98 SE - 4.10.2222

    Either way it doesn't really matter because all of the 9x family of OS's (and that includes ME) are (as you rightfully stated earlier) utter shite.

    @Twoplanks,
    95 OSR2 actually had limited USB support, not full support as most people mistakenly believe.

    Windows 98

    Windows 98 was released as an upgrade to Windows 95. It has the same interface and features of Windows 95, but also includes the following updates:

    * 32-bit file allocation system (FAT32) that not only allows for hard disk drives larger than 2GB, but also more efficiently uses disk space, allowing files to load more quickly and take up less space on disk; FAT32 can read hard disk drives as big as 2TB (2000GB)
    * Support for Universal Serial Bus (USB) peripherals
    * Support for WebTV (which has since become MSN TV)
    * Support for more than one monitor
    * Microsoft Web Server
    * Microsoft Task Scheduler

    Many of these features are also available in a later version of Windows 95 (known as OSR2) that was distributed with new PCs in 1998. OSR2 has never been available for retail sale.

    In 1999, Microsoft released Windows 98SE (Second Edition), which improved Windows greatly and also added the following features:

    * Support for DVD-ROM
    * Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
    * Improved startup time for programs
    * Improved USB support
