DVD-ROM Reading only at 2x

I have recently installed a new 16x DVD-ROM. Now it is only reading at 2x so recording time is taking ages. If I burn from the hard drive I can record at 8x so I know there cannot be anything wrong with my writer. Any ideas anyone

2 things i might suspect is that in the IDE ATA on the device manager , check that you do not have PIO enabled and and that ultra DMA is enabled if possible. Another suggestion is the IDE cable, u sure that it is a fast enough cable for the CD/DVD writer . Some are limited speed wise , try swapping them around . :thumbs

dma is enabled, it used to work ok but on friday it stated running slow, so purchased new DVD-ROM still no joy

If you are copying DVD's on the "fly" , then your DVD-ROM can olny read the DVDs as fast as your DVD-R can write it!

If you want to copy faster, try burning an image to your HDD first!

This is usually the case with DVD read times!

make sure the dvds are on separate ide channels, is the aspi layer enabled?

My old dvd rom was a 16 speed and so is the new one. I have a 16 speed dvd writer, it was only up to the other day when the old one played up and was freezing the computer so I thought it was no good. Bought a new one the computer isnt freezing anymore but reading at only 2 speed. They are both on seperate channels and I have even tried swapping the round but still no joy.

I had a similar problem like yours before, but after installing Power dvd and playing an original dvd for a few mins corrected it, dont ask me how or why but it did. :cartman

The only thing I can think of if nothing has changed is to open device manager and uninstall the dvd drive from the hardware list then restart the pc so it re-installs the driver.

Aren't a lot of DVD drives restricted to 2x for ripping anyhow. What drive is the new one - it may be you need a different firmware to take off the 2x restriction.

Upgrade the ASPII layer. Nero info tool will help you.

Have you tried looking in the bios to make sure 32bit transfer ... somewhere notmally where it shows the HD and DVD screen .. can't remember the name of it ... or alternativly check that ur cable are alright , try swapping with others ... cables can limit speed , but unsure why this just happened for no reason..... me thinks bios and 32 bit transfer will be solution .. then again , i am guessing

Yep that is correct. A large number of DVD-ROMs/Writers have RIPLOCK which will prevent you from ripping/transfering data from a DVD Movie disc any faster than 2X. The only way I know around this is to use a hacked firmware that removes the RIPLOCK.
