Never heard of doing this, but x-raying it wouldn't help, it would need stress analysis to see if tiny cracks have developed.
Have you had an accident in it? It is recommended that it be replaced if you have as the manufacturers can't do stress analysis to my knowledge. They also state that due to the sun, U.V. rays, sweat, make up(one for the ladies), oils in your hair etc, that helmets are replaced every 5ish years anyway.

if you have dropped it or are unsure if its ok, replace it - you can replace a helmet, you cant replace your head.
think of nakano last year in italy on his motogp bike - he had mild concusion after he hit the track at 200mph, i saw a kid killed at 25mph.
Nakano had a new Arai - the kid i saw die had a secondhand bell helmet that had more scuffs than a 10 year olds school shoes....................................
Thanks, nuff said, Its for the other half really, so depending on the cash flow, I'll either get her a new helmet, or sell her bike.

you can get gold stickerd helmets for less that £60 !!
i know im just pointing out how cheap a helmet can be bought for, lidl are selling Road use helmets for £9.99, but you oviously spend as much as you can i know i wouldnt fell safe with that on my head!!!

sorry to hijack thread....just paid £99 for an airoh firefox helmet motocross style and was wondering how to find out if its road legal...

link to above.bought from j@s acsesories
It states quite clearly at the top of the page that the helmet you have just purchased is for off road use only, so no, it isn't road legal.
Thanks for all of the replies chaps, the helmet in question is about 10 years old (kevlar I think) and is preferrable because of its comfort on her funny shaped head. I think a new one is in order and a can of expanding foam to ensure a snug fit.
cheers pegasus, just thought that all helmets had to meet specific eu standards wether on or offroad...
another £99 down the drain pipe.......

The best helmet in the world, cost irrelevant is..................................
One that fits! :whistle
but as a genrel rule spend as much as you can any helmet you wear should fit. if it dont dont wear it!!
I certainly wouldnt spend as mutch as possible line!
Some of the helmets are crazy prices and you are paying for the graphics or the design rather than for extra protection.
If the more expensive helmets are really so mutch better then I dont understand why the manufacturers dont publicise why and how they work, you will find that the large majority of
modern helmets still use compressed foam as there primary means of shock absorbsion.
I havent seen any evidence that a certain helmet will withstand 200x more impact than
that helmet, as if it was proved I would be inclined to buy one. I just havent seen the evidence.
I have purchased many helmets over the years ranging from down right cheapo
to expensive and most people would be shocked to find the relatively minor difference for the price.
I would simply by the best you can afford, like a lot of things in life a lot depends on riding skill, the bike, road conditions and luck!
You might have a £2000 set of top of the range highly protective leathers and a top of the range £600 helmet etc but if you get hit side on by a hgv or 3 ton suv doing 70mph it aint going to make mutch difference.
well actually, the more expensive well known brands are made to a much higher spec.
Arai use a layering techneque when making their lids, when they are made the composite fibre mat is layered by hand, making it stronger.
cheepo helmets are drop moulded, an machine drops a blob of glass fibre & gell coat mix into a mould then its slopped around untill it covers the whole inside of the mould.
also Arai and Shoei are made in japan where standards are very exacting, cheepo ones are made in taiwan by very poorly paid staff.
the venting systems and linings are also my higher quality on the more expencive helmets.
your last comment astounds me, thats something a kid on on a CBT would come out with!!!!!!
just because you would be killed if you were to be hit side on by a lorry, its not worth paying out for a decent lid????????
tell that to Nakano when he came off at the mugello motogp last year when his rear tyre blew at 201mph.
