    Default fractured ribs?

I'm not sure what to do here, but the other week (week last thursday) i was playing in a football match and i got elbowed quite hard in the chest, thought nothing of it than bruising. all week its not got better and only today its got quite bad hurts to breathe twist and sneeze.
i dont seem to think the hospital will say much if ive gone all this time without doing anything. but has anyone on here had simular problems with a cracked rib or bruising? any help would be appreciated

I had exactly the same thing mate from playing football. I went down to the hospital and it turned out to be cracked. Its one of those annoying things though that they couldnt do much about other than give me some paracetemol. Was such a waste of 6hrs waiting time. If i were you id leave it another week and see how it is then. If the pain gets worse then get your arse down there straight away, but i reckon time and rest will be the best healer.
Perhaps a pit stop at the docs might not be such a bad idea, as the wait is likely to be much less and he might be in a better position to advise you onto the next step.
When it happened to me, the pain was immense whenever i sneezed or twisted. The rest of the time it was like a dull ache. Time wise, it took me about 4 weeks before i was completely back to normal although after about 2 weeks there was a marked improvement.

Mine are still aching like fcuk after an incident two years ago trying to do an overhead kick. I'm positive that they still haven't healed properly. Ache lots if I sleep on my front. Doctors are for poofs

sorta got the same thing. Suffered an injury about 5 or 6 years ago where i slammed my chest into a metal bar at some speed (hill, blades, me, no experience, need i say more?) i suffered no broken ribs but I did crack the centre which wont heal.

even today I cant sneeze without severe pains in my chest and it constantly cracks when I stretch or sometimes just when i breathe. It also hurts like fuck a lot and is generally uncomfortable.

urr yeah, my advice is get it sorted or it'll just piss you off when it's too late to do anyhing about it.

Dingle I broke my ribs late last year & I know how it feels. You feel restricted, weak as a kitten & if you're anything like I was you feel like your ribs are folding outwards on the side that's affected. I went to work for a few shifts (climbing up ladders with 1 arm etc) until I finally went to the doc's. He said it was tissue damage & take a few days off work. When I was at home loading the washer I felt my ribs prise apart, really felt the glue come apart between the breaks. Sickening. Stupid quack, I went to get another verdict & they were cracked after all.

Anyhoo, I'd say go to the doc's but they're not open till tuesday, so maybe the hospital is a good idea. You'll get painkillers & told to take it easy. You might also get a strap to wear around your chest so that you can't expand it too far. Mine too about 2 weeks to feel like they were glued again, maybe a further month before I felt confident in them again.

Echo the above - sleeping/showering etc is a nightmare. So's going to the bog!

its best to get cracked ribs checked out incase u have 1 splinterd inwards
think u'd rather have a few hours wait in the hosptial and walk away safe then leave then sneeze hard and puncture ur lung :S

I did my Quadracep running during a cricket game once (yes, yes, I know), felt it twang/snap, leaving a large lump at the top of my leg... Went to hospital unable to put any pressure on it. Student doc checked, said it was just a pulled/torn muscle, got a senoir doc in (cause I'm sceptical) and he gave the same verdict. They gave me painkillers and crutches and sent me home. 2 weeks later I had very little improvment, so I went to a physio (at £40 and hour). She agreed it was a tear or pull and proceeded to kneed it (painful) and apply electrotherapy for 3 weeks. The pain was not worth £40 and hour, so I stopped and let it heal. 6 months or so later I could run again, so didn't worry much after that.
Recently I got a scan done, and it turns out one of my quads is snapped off at the knee joint and sitting in a nice neat bundle at the top of my leg (not too visible now execpt when I flex a certain way). Doc said not to worry as I have 3 more :nowords:

Considering I told every one of those "specialists" that I was convinced I had snapped it, I now insist on a scan/X-ray when I have someething I think is broken. Crappy NHS! :grr:
