    Default pc locks up

My nephew downloaded a game and installed it after this my sisters pc won't boot up.
It starts to load but locks up on the xp screen. It does not boot in safe mode either.
I've ran the repair function and it tells me that the registery is corrupt and to remove any recently installed software but i can as i don't know how to do it without windows loaded.
Can someone give me a few clues to how to delete the program he installed or how to edit the registery when the pc won't startup.

Your nephew downloaded a game on your sisters pc and you have the problem?

    Deny everything.

Seriously, what symptoms show why it won't boot into safe mode? Safe mode precludes manufacturers device drivers and loads one of the two available registry hives, so most things can be fixed doing that. So what shows/fails when trying to boot to safe mode?

Pending a reply to that you say you "ran the repair function". What repair function? Did you run from a bootable CD and try the repair console?

    Post back 8P.

this is the truth m8, my nephew screwed the pc and my sis has asked me to try and help out.

When you try and boot in safe mode the pc reboots itself and goes back to the screen where you can select what startup you would like, the only way to progress slightly past this is to select the normal startup where the xp screen comes on and that is it.

What i did was run the recovery console, at this stage it told me that the registery was corrupt and any recently installed hard or software should be removed, but i cant do anything with it after this.

Okipoki here's what I would do, and hopefully you, too.

Adjust the PC boot sequence to boot from CDROM. Shouldn't be hard to do that but if you're not familiar with it try F2 when booting up (or try the DEL key); the boot sequence dictates the order in which the bootable devices are scanned for a boot record.

Ok, so we're now loading up from the CD into which you've pre-placed the CDROM. Presumably you've got to this point if you've tried the recovery console (your previous post). What you need to do is get to the point in the load where you can do DOS commands (option "R"?). There you should be able to type "CHKDSK /R" which will detect & repair bad blocks/sectors. This might help. Try It. Also try "FIXMBR" just for the hell of it in case the master boot record is corrupt/damaged.

Depending on the version of windows 2000 and XP the windows install disk has a repair function as part of the setup process and it will allow you to repair the existing install of windows. so you need to boot to the install cd and select repair.

Mate, you can't fix the registry like that. The registry is composed of 2 hives which are system locations in unmovable blocks on the drive. If the drive was ok she could have used the regedit option "file | export hive" and you could have used "file | import hive" to analyse and possibly fix it.

    As it stands, you cant.

Is it possible for you to do a "chkdsk /r" on the drive you've now got connected to your pc?

In the end, using xp pro formatted and reinstalled it seemed the easiest thing to do, there were no files that were needed to be kept and my nephew had installed all sorts of crap so best to justget rid and start again.

Have you tried pressing F8 and booting into last known good configuration? that usually boots to the last time you were able to log on, which would be the time your nephew logged in and installed the game. Also try booting to safe mode and turning off system restore, then uninstall the game and reboot, see if that goes in to windows ok.
