I think you will be having a hard time trying to get around the Bios pass, you were lucky you got it to install XP, if the laptop had booted from the HDD rather than the CDrom first then you wouldnt have been able to do anything (unless its one of those that has got the bootmenu on startup),Ive got a box full of laptops that have a power on password prompt and because the cmos batt had gone flat i need to get into the bios to reset it, but without the power on pass they are rendered useless. i would say dont try to fix thats not broken.

Isn't there 2 types of bios p/w? One that prompts on every loadtime (which you don't seem to get prompted for) and a different one for if you need to access the bios settings?

I'd remove the battery and reset the mobo, if that's possible.

    What make lappy?

you can try any of these, one should work :nowords:

    >Reset the CMOS by removing the battery or just moving the reset jumper (u'll need a motherboard manual for the jumper if you've not done it before)

    >Find the BIOS name/revision and then search for the keyboard commend to reset it (a few BIOS's allow you to hold a key combo @ startup for a soft reset)

    >Find a master password (I think some BIOS's actually have two passwords and one master (not changeable) can overide the other, but I am less confident on this)

For any of them to be easy you'll/we'll need to know the motherboard brand and model number plus the BIOS version. You can see what it says when u boot the PC, you'll need the BIOS name (like AWARD) the version number and probably the motherboard brand...all this info is just the first screen (oir after the graphics card screen) when the PC boots. If you have a full screen image you'll need to press whatever button stops that from showing)...

if any of thats a problem just give as much info as u can...:thumbs

All mobo's have a master password, which will get you in, but you need to know the make of BIOS. As already stated above, a cmos reset will either remove the password, or set it back to manufacturers password, which you can lookup on the net... Getting into the lappy to do that may be tricky if you've not done it before tho...

Failing all of the above I would reflash the bios with an updated version if you can find one, or perhaps reflash with the same version that you have now. Assuming the password is stored in the bios on this model of laptop, and not in a separate chip like on dell laptops, it will completely reset everything allowing you to access the bios. Give it a try Hope this helps. On compaq laptops you can reset the password by removing the bios battery and leaving it out for around 20 minutes I havent come across a laptop that cant be unlocked fairly easily other than Dell's (which can be done if you know the right people) and toshibas (can be done by floppy disk or pass reset dongle)
