    Default screen not coming on

My brothers computer screen is not coming on. I have tried the screen on another computer and it works ok, so it is not a monitor problem. He has had a problem with the screen coming on before and has taken it in and had the RAM replaced and fixed it. It had 1 x 128mb and 1x 64mb SDRAM PC100 ram in it. I replaced this with 2 x 128mb sdram, but the same happens. The screen's green light comes on when the computer is turned on, but nothing comes on the screen. The computer beeps, then beeps another 3 times. Does this mean it is a video/graphics problem? The computer is about 4 years old and has on board video/grpahics. Do this mean that if I tried installing a graphics/video card, there will be problems because of the onboard one - if the problem is the graphics?
    Thanks

The beeps are telling you what the fault is.you will need to find the beep error codes for the type and model of motherboard fitted. and try the memory one at a time not 2 as it can be the modules.

Shouldn't be the drivers as Windows won't have loaded them yet. The beeps sound like a VGA error. Check in the BIOS that it's not been set to expect a graphics card to be present, and also test the memory one stick at a time as previously suggested.

Not easy to do as the screen wont come on. its one of my hate things when onboard graphics go as you cant get to the bios, but it sounds like memory to me.You said it had happened before and he got new memory fitted, so i would look there first, and if you let us know what board it is we can find the error codes.

Just noticed you said the green light comes on, do you mean goes from orange to green when the pc is turned on if so it may be the graphics, do the memory one at a time and then put a pci card in and see if you can get to the bios, and set things up like removing the onboard card.

we realy need to know which board and bios it is

Shove in a video card (dont buy anything to good for the test) and you should be ok it will take fromt he onboard video - old PC beeps codes used to be kind of universal, so I'm guessing ram or video car with 1-3 beeps.

If the video card replacement dont work - remove the memory and clean the connections on both the mem and mb, a light brush (find the gf make up brush is great!) and replace each mem stick one at a time. HAVE FUN!

I had exactly the same trouble with a mates pc which i asked about in this section a few months ago, and that turned out to be the memory (pc beeping thread ), as mentioned try one stick of memory at a time.

    hi guys

thanks for all your help. tried memory at a time, and a cheap graphics card, but nothing still came on. It really wasn't worth repairing properly, so am building him a new amd64 computer (hopefully!!) ordered the parts and case, and hopefully put it together with a "build a computer" book.

    cheers again for advice
