Default Career change? Whats a decent job?

Im bored, extremely bored of what i do even though i earn a nice salary its just not interesting, at all.

There is no cash left in the IT industry imo, everyone does it these days, and those who dont, are trying to learn how to.

Anyone got nowt interesting worth doing? I dont really know what i want to do in life anymore and its really starting to bum me out, bah.

Ive tried talking to a couple of people, they recommend the same shit, IT or doing art (art? wtf is that shit)...

A lot of people think that but my opinion is that you aren't looking in the right place. The market bears what it has to pay. IT is a ridiculously broad spectrum of work from DP to coding to architecture to FM to support and many other diverse areas.

What do you do in IT Andy? You may be able to retrain slightly or put your skills to better use and make some money contracting or in a nice job with benefits.

There is plenty of money in IT, be one of the best in IT and the money tree will keep shaking forever!

Get into entertainment/leisure, ie own a club/bar, people always pay well to help unwind.......from their stressful IT job probably!

I was once a freelance web-designer, do the occasional java coding. Did have a PC store but that flopped, at the mo i just run a restaurant. But im on about IT, because thats where i feel my career originally was, thats what i studied for, i just dunno what i want to do anymore.

In all honesty, aside from browsing the net im seriously fed up of fucking computers, lol.

The thing with Java is I am seeing allsorts of chimps trying to get into it and making an arse of it. Java is only interesting to me when used away from the web. We use it where I work for a multitude of things though I have barely touched it myself. I find IT very fulfilling but like to be able to fiddle with new tech and see what it can do for me.

I tend to treat my PC as my slave and make it do as much as I can for me, save me money, make me money etc, etc.

Entertainment is indeed a good industry to get into. I have a mate that owns a cafe and another about to buy his Mrs a bar and to be honest if you have the right disposition then that is the way to go as it is very fulfilling.

I am in IT and getting a little fed up. Although I wouldn't mind getting out of it all and becoming a secondary school teacher teaching IT.

I reckon it would be a good rewarding job and very stress free as a computing teacher.

Also if anyone has any info on becoming a computing teacher at secondary level could they post some details as I am very interested at the moment.

    Cheers,

    Tam.

tam, you do realise that teaching = shit pay don't you?

that's why you can have really shit grades and still become a teacher. too many people go into teaching as a last resort, but thats for another thread.

original poster... if you are good with java, why not look into telecoms sector of IT - not just java games, but java apps for corporates who are looking to expand the realms of their data networks, etc... very lucrative atm, especially if you are good with securing it all as well. look into windows mobile, symbian and blackberry devices for investment banks, law firms, accountancy firms, professional services... the list goes on.

obviously you will not be able to sell directly to the big firms if you are not a name already, but there are plenty of smes that you can mop up if you offer good product PLUS good ongoing support service.

honestDave: its crap to start with. Yes. But in the long run I'll always have a job to go to and it'll be a decent wage a few years down the line.

I know a maths teacher who's done the job 3 years now and earns nearly 30k doing secondary. Now thats a good wage considering he does fuck all work as he puts it.

I'm not going into it to do fuck all work but to do my best. I want a nice career where I'll get a good pension.

Getting bored of my User Acceptance/System testing IT Role. I basically get paid to break code and upset developers.

I'm looking at getting into the Web Design area now (ASP.Net, C#, VB.Net, IIS, SQL Server etc....) and have plenty of agents looking for me.

In the mean time however I am also considering a move to a different company. A change of scenary may wake me up a little. All I do at the moment at work is mess about on DF

Become a self employed builder like me its great fun you can do what you want when you want and you can charge earthly amounts on the jobs you get, aside from that all you really do is drink brews all day and suck the air through your teeth and shake your head when asked how your going to fix something, saying bloody hell love thats gonna be a bit expensive im afraid.

    I love my job

We should create a freelance DF Web Building company..... Could be worth a couple of quid each....

That's after I finish coding my fantasy football site www.goldbergsfooty.co.uk

In it's 3rd season but i'm currently updating all of the code to c# and making the whole process 90% automated now instead of 30%!

For those interested it is coded in C#, ASP.Net, VB.Net, SQL Server 2000 and hosted on IIS 5.1

All data is fictional at the moment whislt it is been tested. A lot of features etc... not 100% working and I am aware of that but by the end of next month it will rock!

I am looking at making it go live the season after next so will be asking DF members if they are interested. At the same time If you would like your own 'Mini League' it can be arranged.....

To be honest mate it's only 30% up and running at the moment. I aim to have it 100% by end of July in time for the 'Auction'

Basically it works the same way (only better ) as www.fantasyleague.co.uk I use the same points method etc.... But it's the 'behind the scenes' features that make it fantastic. At any point you will be able to see who played when and how many points they made you or didn't if you didn't have them in your squad etc.....

The 'Team Page' when you click a team from the main screen has an excellent feature that tells you by highlighting the player in Bold who is playing in that set of fixtures etc.....

I would really like to share this with DF members, but I dont think the functionality will be there this season for an additional league etc... plus the rules are slightly complicated for FFL beginers.... However Season 2006/2007 I'm sure you will see a spin off DF version for us

The reason I did this was because it cost £35 per person for www.fantasyleague.co.uk each season. Now it costs a few quid for the domain name

How uncanny is that - 3 people (including me) work in the IT industry who are fucking bored shitless with it lol.

I've been a newmedia (shite word) developer for about 11 years now, and I'm bored to the back teeth of it. I'm fed up with design really and even more sick of fucking moany clients who spend weeks telling you what they DONT want, but not 5 minutes telling you what they do. I have lost all my inspiration for the job, and it's getting on my tits. I just can't motivate myself to do it anymore. I can do most things, and I'm definitely wasting my talents by not doing it - but I just go to work and do fuck all.

I've been toying with the idea of becoming a chef for years now, and I think I really need to start looking for something different to do. I see people who do "consultancy" in my line of work get paid shit loads for talking bollocks about what I do, so maybe I should just go and do that.

The web design tree has been plucked bare imo, and to find some really good money in it - you have to REALLY invest heavily in sales - and to be honest, it's just not my bag.

Had an Interview a few weeks back at a company for Web Development, Based in Covent garden. They were very unprofessional! No feedback yet!

Had an Interview Tuesday with a 'Funded' Company as Test Lead, apparently they have a system that has NO competition so guaranteed to suceed! I should get a yeah or neh later today on that!

Got an Interview Tuesday with a Movie Company in Soho for QA Testing and another with a company in Paddington for Web Development on Tuesday also.

So I have got the Ball Rolling, they do say that the Job is yours when you get as far as an interview, you just have to sell yourself better than the other candidates!

Fingers Crossed I could have a new employer in the next few weeks and Job will be good again... for a short while lol!

Been with the same Company now for 8 years! Talk of down sizing our dept which means possible redundancy. What I dont want to do is leave and miss out on it! I get 3 weeks for every year I have been here, thats 24 weeks! would keep me ticking over for a while to find work! So i'm in a very strange situation at the moment!
