Help Leather Chair - Ink Pen - Shite! - Help :(

    Hey guys,

got a brand new leather chair in the living room.... got a doesy lil brother cover in pen who thinks its a good idea to fall asleep on it...

(which i must admit is usualy the best thing to do :thumbs )

however this pen that was on him has mirror imprinted on the chair.

and now have some what of a backwords star and circle symbol on me chair (dont ask)

oh yeh... beige leather chair! :coffee:

any ideas or recommendations about the best method to deal with this.

whats best to use on leather, and to remove ink - obvioulsy dont wanna use something that will get rid of pen but also burn away the leather.

    geez! :nono

    Cheers.

I mild soap with water will be fine, that is what we ok my mum uses on ours. You can also get cleaning kits that increase the life of the leather with some moisturiser or somthing.

Just use soap and water but not too much water or you will be sitting in a puddle

Also try to keep it clean, do it at least once a week to keep it looking nice ours is a cream suite and the bits that are used or walked past and people touch can get dirty and look a mess if left for a while.

    hi spencer
I am a leather technician. Do not use soap as it has detergent in it and will lift the pigment off your leather! If I was you I would go to your local DFS/SCS and buy an INK STICK. These are like a lip stick, but must be use asap. When ink gets onto leather you only have about 24 hours to get it out as it sinks deeper and deeper into your leather. As for the care kits, they are good and will make your furniture last longer.

    Hope this helps.

Looks like we have been doing it wrong for the past 4 years then, soap (dove and imperial leather i think) has removed loads of pen marks and blood from ours my dad has psoriasis and picks the skin off and gets blood on the arms of the chairs.

Depends on which kind of leather you have. there are a few different finishes, aniline leather, semi-aniline leather, top coated/pigmented, and by-cast. these are about the most common.
you can use soap, but it wise to use pure soap(Lux flakes in weak water solution, but only on top coated or bycast, as it will soak into aniline and make leather dark) to cut down on the long term effect of detergents on the finish..
I have removed blood by using salivia, as spit has an enzyme that breaks down blood, mainly in fabric, butworks on leather too.
After a while the ink mark will, if on an area getting direct use,ie. seat back inside arm, start to fade out..
Buy the way i`m an upholsterer..incase you havent guessed!! lol

Hairspray can be used but only in small doses, and only if the ink is very fresh, as the chemicals in the hairspray take off a layer of colour, the risk is, if you do it much you`ll have no colour left, just a bare patch.
I find that even the products i use, i try and keep to an isolated area, use a cottonbud, and just treat the ink itself rather than the area around it.

    Hey little john,

The products you have used may well work, but as for the long term effect on the leather these products (dove and imperial leather ) will cause a film build up on the surface and eventually cause the leather to feel sticky. Detergents of any kind will damage leather and lift off the colour eventually. Above all don't use baby wipes like some of the morons say at most of the top stores.

    Hi Wonkyfox,
You are right with the hair spray trick. Like you said it will take off colour.
Always thought you where in the upholstery trade, as you come across as slightly MAD! LOL. :tongue :coffee:
