Default " Cable Modems In One House

rite guys got a weird question, i personally dont think it will work but just wanna make sure before i tell him.

Me m8 has had to move out his house and back in with his mam for a while, now shes got blueyonder broadband downstairs, hes got his old modem from his house.

Now he wants to put a splitter on the cable that comes in off the street and send a cable to each of the 2 cable modems so they can both go on the net at the same time, as i said i dont think its possile but what do i know.

oh and we alrady know about networking em and all that, but thats not an option (dont ask why coz i really dont know)

so guys does anyone know FOR SURE if this will/wont work

    any ideas really appreciated

    cheers

    this is wot i mean

You can split cable feeds into as many areas as you like - the only thing is with the modems, they get registered when you turn them on - i think thats how they know what speed your gonna have etc etc?

Thats why the guy pisses about ringing up HQ when he installs it to make sure they getting the signal.

So saying that the second modem he plans to use would have a different mac address - so im not sure if it would actually allow him online with it.

I know is not the dead cert you was looking for but its an insight at least.

The TW modems have both a ethernet and USB connection on them.

Why not run a usb connection to the closest machine - then run a ethernet cable from the modem to the other machine?

@Tech Guys - would that even work?

I know i had mine both plugged in at the same time - but only had 1 connected on the machine, but thats obvious - how about running each connection but to another machine?

i.e - Usb to Computer 1 and Ethernet to Computer 2.

    hmmm

If I remember right You'll have to re-boot the modem before switching from USB to RJ45
My mate ran a similar setup on TW and u can only run 1 connection at a time not both simulaneously. he used RJ45 for xbox live and the usb for his PC.
A router is always the best option in these cases.
    Hope this helps

maybe primitve but how about a ethernet splitter?

    http://www.duxcw.com/yabbse/index.ph...;threadid=5314

I have no idea about the technial implications of splitting it (sorry) but it seems like it could work :\

As long as the modem from the old house is within the same area, it should work. When I lived in Bristol, one of my flatmates used to bring his works modem home over the weekend to download songs in the napster days. The cable network is basically a large loop, so it should not matter where in that loop you attatch it...

The only way the CM will work is if it is registered at the ISP's end.

You can have 2 CM's on one line if they are both registered.

You cannot use the RJ45 & USB interfaces at the same time.

The ethernet "splitter" suggestion won't do you any good in this case.

Why is a router not an option?

it is possible, only if both modems are from the same area and DHCP pool, if its a few streets then no problem, if your both served from the same DHCP server and network then all is fine.

I see no reason for TW not to allow 2 modems at the same address, although this obviously means that he will be paying for 2 lots of broadband as TW will regard it as 2 seperate accounts.

as already stated a router is the easiest option.. if he already has another modem which is exploitable then thats a different matter

I bought a modem when our cable company started thier cable BB. It was the best thing I ever did. When I moved accross the city I set up another BB at that address, but the old BB modem still workied. Later I move back to the original address and allthough they still had cable TV, they had canceled the BB connection. Anyhow I plugged the modem in and away you it went. I've been running this for 2 years!

I belive they disable the individual modems at the head end. If the modem is not disbale it should work. Only one way to find out. The speed of the connection he will reciev is dependant on what the modem was registed with. I suppose you could spoof a MAC address, but I'm not sure how this will be done and will be different for each modem.

Otherwise a router will suffice, you can pick these up for just a few quid.

I don't think two MAC's on the same network would work. A MAC address is supposed to be unique for each peice of network equipment. If two units try to log onto the same network with the same MAC, one would have to be kicked off.

What you need is a MAC address that is regestered but not used, or not used at the times you are using it. I have no idea where to get these from, but I'm sure they will be avliable somewhere.

you will need a mac from a different UBR.. So if you are on UBR03 then get one from UBR02 etc.. like another part of your home town/city, you will need a program called dhcpforce to get the mac. its easy to use pretty well just click start and they come rolling in... apparently :/

What sort of modem is it.. ideally a SB3100 4100 or 4200 then they can be modified using software (should take about 10 mins). if its an *** 100/120 or 200 then you will need a max232 serial lead with 5 pin socket (like you get with a cd-rom drive lead...
