The parrot may be dead, but it has not ceased to be considered funny. The Monty Python films have topped a poll of the best film adaptation of a TV series, ahead of American hits such as Mission: Impossible and the Star Trek movies.

More than 8,000 Radio Times readers voted for their favourite TV spin-offs and crowned the British comedy films, which include The Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life and The Holy Grail, as the best big-screen translations.

"Most movie spin-offs from TV series are doomed to failure because each episode of a series is simply an anecdote," said film critic Barry Norman. "A movie should at least be a short novel - and you can't make a novel out of an anecdote."

In a list dominated by American features, other films deemed successful adaptations were 1993's The Fugitive, the Batman movies and Brian De Palma's version of The Untouchables.

In the worst TV spin-off category, 1977's Are You Being Served? was considered irredeemable, closely followed by The Avengers film starring Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes. Other duds include 1996's Sgt Bilko, Scooby-Doo and Charlie's Angels.
