What purpose does it serve really?

Some people use it as a whipping stick, some as a jolly boys club (no sexism intended)

If it was converted to df $ who would benefit? Certainly not the people behind funding it, even if it is used for free vip or some other benefit then someone, somewhere would be paying for it.

We all know that we are all wonderful, why not just scrap it and leave thanks, praise and misery as just that.
Me and my fella spit our dummies out so we won't be coming back. ever. boo hoo.

This is a techy / hackers forum not a fu**ing mothers meeting so - peace out.

I don't agree with scrapping it or the dollars thing. It serves as a thank you, pat on the back or just a further indication of appreciation, without having to disadvantage anyone financially. It is done privately and at the discretion of the "giver". I think it's a good idea and okay it's a bit of an ego massage but it's nice to get something back.

even if it gets full and nobody knows who has more than each other, its always nice to go into your control panel and see what comments are left by friendly karma awarders. especially if the comment is witty.

Then why not just say thank you? It's worked for thousands of years!

    You go girl!

It is a thank you but one that lasts a bit longer by staying in your user profile for a while.

It's not a great system in that you can't give negative karma for a post you don't approve of without generally receiving some back in retaliation. I've given polite negative karma for posts I didn't approve of before and had back some lovely red blobs with comments that I couldn't possibly repeat here. :censored

So with the lack of negative karma everyone's karma just ends up going up and up.

Maybe the way to go is to change the way in which Karma is given? I seem to have suddenly got quite a decent rating due to a couple of applications of karma by long standing and high ranking individuals. It does boost your self confidence and give you a warm glow, but does it mean a great deal? I suppose it gives an indication of how you may be seen by other forum members, but then why should I get more points from one person than another?

Change it so that everyone gives the same amount of karma, irrespective of standing. Or keep the system as it is but remove the display, then we can all keep our warm glow and read the comments in User CP without being able to play the "My karma's better than yours" game.
