Tech Converting Hi-Fi Speakers to PC Speakers?

    Is it Possible/Advisable?

I have two old clunky Aiwa speakers that (sounded) pretty good, the hi-fi dosent work properly anymore but I'd still like to use the speakers as pc speakers (if possible). They are the large speakers, a set of two, both of them have a negative and positive input terminal each. I was wondering if there would be anyway to get both speakers connected to the PC and working?? Any help much appreciated.

Here are the all the details I could find on the back of the speakers.

    BRAND: Aiwa
    MODEL NO.: SX-N858
    IMPEDANCE: 6 ohms

    Cheers,

Well what connectors do the speakers use? Is it bare wire or is it some sort of jack plug?

The only way i can think of is being able to adapt the speaker inputs into a sort of 3.5 headphone jack, then being able to use a headphone doubler. only way i can think of

Yep, you should be able to do this.

Basically I have one of these cables here, made by IXOS:

And it lets me plug anything, like my iPod or my PC through my hi-fi speakers. However you need to run the cable through an amplifier first, then into your speakers. Any amplifier will do really, just find the power you want, stuff from eBay like this would suit you fine:

@willyboy: Its bare wire at the end.

@stuz: Thanks, will look into it. As for the amplifier, I just saw the Sonic Impact T-Amp thread around here somewhere the review seems pretty good too, and its cheap. Will that do? (http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/t-amp_e.html).

For the price of the sonic-t plus power supply & cables/adaptors you could get a half-decent set of pc surround speakers+sub

If you're determined to use the aiwa speakers then you would be better off getting the sub unit from a pc speaker system & putting your speaker wires into that, it will most likely have sprung wire sockets too.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...

get a cheap amp off the carboot, probably pick one up for a fiver

if you already have a working stereo in the same room, check that doesnt have some sort of AUX input on the back and then you could just wire the pc into that and scrap the aiwa speekers

You could wire the bare ends of the cables onto 3.5mm jack plugs if you know how to solder but i'd be worried the soundcards output alone wont be enough to really power the speakers. More than likely wouldn't be enough.

Does the hi-fi have an AUX in? my hifi's tape deck/cd player is knackered but i run a 3.5mm to phono cable from the soundcard and into the AUX in, then i can have my soundcard coming thru the hifi's amp and speakers, sounds great, way better than any shitty dedicated pc speakers.

Failing all that, just pickup a cheap amp from richer sounds or somewhere and buy a 3.5mm to phono cable, one end goes into ur soundcards output, the other into the amp and thats it. Mkae sure the speakers can handle the amplifiers output though, no point trying to put 50watts into 10w speakers lol
