    Default Company Share Schemes

What do you think of company share schemes? Does your company have one? Is it a share award or share option? Do they make you feel more empowered/secure/emotionally tied to the company? Or would you just prefer extra cash?

A lot of questions I know, any thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks.

I'm in one & save £250 a month into it. I do it mainly for the saving aspect as I'd never 'manually' put that much aside. I've had two mature (out of several I have ongoing at a time) and the 1st one I dropped a bollock taking the shares, only now are they worth what I paid. The second one that matured it was only worth taking the money back, plus interest.

"Do they make you feel more empowered/secure/emotionally tied to the company?" No way, in fact our ex MD used to like saying in the annual meetings that as (some of us are) shareholders we should embrace productivity schemes etc. which basically means working ourselves out of a job. On top of that, as a shareholder, I get bi-annual company reports & when you see the amounts they pay the board(s) and their free shares that are awarded each year it just proves how insignificant your standard employee is.

Extra cash? Well I'd always wanted extra security & would rather be paid well for longer than very well for a shortened length of time. Although recently I've lost heart with my employer & my prospects (even though I do plenty to push myself forward) and now I'd like to have a complete change.

    Any more questions, feel free.

Doesn't change my attitude to the place one bit. As far as I'm concerned it's free money and I'd be stupid not to take it.

Maybe I should explain that ours is a long term plan that allows you to buy shares at less than the price when you start the plan. At worse, you take the money and don't buy the shares if the price has dropped so you really can't loose

The missus is in one with the Bank - and while I think it's a fucking crock of snot and the 40 notes a month would be better stuck into a high interest account - it has actually worked out okay this year as we've cashed one in for about 500 quid (off an investment of 120) and we should have another one next year for double that - but I still reckon it's a bit of a cock arse way round things.

I looked into it and decided I'd be better off paying the money I would pay into our shares scheme into my mortgage. It gets paid off very early, I save a shedload of interest and between my last payment date and my retirement age I will save all my mortgage payments as additional pension equity.

Of course it's a gamble, but then what isn't these days?

Our share scheme gives you the price of the shares from when you start (lets say £1.00) and you save x amount per month, then after 3/5 years you then sell the shares for their market value. So if you brought them for a quid, then they were worth £1.50 you will have made 50% on your investment.

But, as with all shares, they can go down as well as up.

Thanks for th replies, seems no one really gives a toss about share schemes then. Cross that off the list........... what about incentive schemes, or bonuses based on performance, do they make you work harder?

Two friends of mine, their dad's worked for CMG (Computer Marketing Group), and always took the company shares as opposed to the cash equivalent, and when CMG floated, they walked away with a serious amount of dough.

I on the other had got shafted by a large supermarket chain, that I worked for as a teenager. I was Sunday staff and in my naivety, and at the advice of my immediate manager, plumped for the share options(profit sharing) as opposed to the cash equivalent of 5 weeks wages. Initially I was pleased as punch with my shrewd move, but to my chagrin, several weeks later I was called into the admin office to be told that there had been a mistake and that as Sunday staff I only had a temporary contract and didn't qualify for the profit sharing scheme. So I was left with nothing. I got my own back by secreting opened packets of pate under the flooring in the chiller room.

We had a good one at my work, it was a share save scheme...but the boss pulled the company back off the stock market and we all had to sell our shares back......made a good profit though!!!

Definately bonuses are the way to go.

As well as a subsidised shares scheme we've also got a profit sharing bonus scheme in place. At first it was a basic of (up to) 20% of salary but now it's moved to a goal based scheme.

I got a bonus of roughly £6K (pre-tax) this year and that is plenty of motivation. Although it does piss me off counting out how much the taxman took compared to what I was giving him when I was contracting

I see where you're coming from now Czar.
For my current occupation there isn't the opportunity to get any extra reward, apart from staying there 10, 25 or 40 years.

About a year ago there was a link around to a company that took advantage of government education grants. They were offering products like pushbikes & pda's. I presume it was in exchange for the grant fees, which I guess would be in the order of a couple of hundred quid. This sort of scheme could cost you little & give the employee a little pressie.

Or you could be thinking about a more substantial reward.
