Help Any ideas why I can't share documents on my home network

    Help,

over the last couple of weeks, I've installed a new wireless router in my home network (2 pcs connected to the router using a network cable). ALso I've had to re-install windows XP on my pc because of another problem.

I've now found that my son can't access the shared documentson on my PC, though I can access his. He can print on the printer that's connected to my PC, and each PC sees that the other is present so I think that the problem should be fairly straight forward.

I've reset-up the network using windows network wizzard, I've made sure that the target names are correct, I've switched off firewalls, but no luck.

It's a real pain now because I use his PC to burn my disks and hve no way of transferring any large files for burning.

    any ideas??

    cheers peeps.

btw the message that I (my son) get when trying to access the shared docs folder is

.....SharedDocs is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Have you set up a user on your machine, ideally the same one your son uses on his machine. Also open my computer, click on Tools/Folder options, click the view tab and switch off:

Nope - there are no users on my pc (and this hasn't changed)

also ticking boxex has no effect on the file sharing problem

    To welsh Pete below

The router, a Safecom, connects both PCs using network cables. Previously he connected straight into my PC using a crossover cable. I had to buy an adaptor to convert the crossover back to a normal cable for the wireless router. I'll have a look at this tomorrow, though I still find it strange that I can see his folder and he can use my priinter

Are you and your son using wired or wireless connection? If wired then does it work wireless and vice versa?

Reason I ask is that I installed a cat5 network a while back and had a very similar problem. Turnd out that 2 of the 4 ethernet cables pairs were severed, leaving only the transmitt and recieve pair intact. While, theoretically, this should have been fine it wasnt and running a new cable (with all 4 pairs intact) cured it.

Maybe try a new patch lead, or reinstalling all nic/wireless drivers. Is the wireless signal weak?

    Hope this helps.

if you can share his but he can't share yours then have you checked you have set your shared documents folder to be allowed to be shared on the network , right click on folder , properties and sharing tab

i have just done a reinstall of xp on my main pc and had a similar problem. my main pc could access the shared docs on the other pc's but they couldnt access the shared docs on mine.

Solution: dead simple, believe it or not, just uncheck and recheck the 'share this folder' option, and viola, all is well!!

    worked for me anyway!!
