Question 1.6 VW Golf (MK4) vs 1.6 GTI Pug 106

Hey, me and my m8 were havin an argument as to which one of these cars would win in a drag race, and a track race, he reckons the 1.6 GTI could whip the 1.6 VW Golf (we are talkin bout both cars with full stainless steel exhausts, viper induction kits, superchipped, turbo'd, etc, etc (the Golf wud have a bodykit on it too)), and he even thinks that the 1.6 GTI wud whip a 1.8 GTI Golf (again both wit superchips, etc (and again the Golf wud have a full bodykit))!!!

I might let him have it with the 1.6 Golf, but no way wud a 1.6 GTI Pug 106 beat a 1.8 GTI VW Golf (MK4)...

    What do u guys think??

EDIT: Forgot to mention the cars will both have coilovers, short shifters, uprated brakes and pads, alloys, some good rubber to keep them on the road, etc...!!!

I had a saxo vts (which is the same as a 106gti) with some mild mods and I reckon it would probably win against a 1.6 golf as the golf is much heavier. Now i have a golf and I think the saxo would win round the twisties too as they are very nimble and stick to the road very well. The Mk4 golf is quite wallowy in comparison.

I think the 106 would have to be quite heavily modded to beat a 1.8T golf although i havent driven one so I cant say for sure. It is possible tho as there are some supercharged saxos around that have a fair amount of power.

fair enuff, but wot about the 1.8 Golf GTI...even if it cant handle as well, you dnt need handling in a drag race...oh n I for got to mention the coilovers, etc, etc to improve handling, traction, etc...so both of the cars will have "The Works"

If it was a heavily modded 106 vs a heavily modded 1.8gti then i would say the 106 wouldnt have a chance (but as I said I havent driven a 1.8T)

my mum had a 1.8t, was quick, but was worse off for the traction control, if you know how to drive without it. id say 106 on twisties, golf in a drag, BUT, would depend how long the drag was. The golf is very very heavy.

Not a 1.8T (Turbo), a 1.8 GTI (Gran Turismo Injection)

I think 106 deffo then, beats it as standard, so when there both fully tuned, i can only predict the same, also the weight advantage.

your friend is right a 106 gti would spank a mk4 1.6 golf on any road no competion, and beat a 1.8 GTI quite easily.

dnt really know y i sed the 1.6 Golf wud beat the 106, wasn't thinkin bout power/weight ratio...and would you not be able to get more power out of the 1.8GTI than the 1.6GTI when fully tuned?

me and my mate had a drag and i was in a golf 1.8gti, he was in a 106 1.6gti and he did have the lead for a fair bit of the A45 but when i needed it the power kicked in and the golf flew past him. as for the 1.6golf gti i dont think there as good as a 106 1.6gti.

yea, thts wot i was thinkin, i mean the 106 is lighter, so it wud have a better acceleration, but the 1.8GTI would have quite a bit more power, so it would pull away in the top end...not sure how they would compare on a track tho....

Since it's French and no doubtly made of cheap plastic and recycled sardin tins i'd imagine the 106 is vastly lighter than the refined and built to last Golf.

It however wouldn't have a chance in hell at beating a 1.8T GTI

    Are these figure accurate from:

    http://www.channel4.com/4car/feature...s-2246-10.html

not sure if they are? cause the times are slow for the GTI's

    Engines and performance:
    Petrol:
    1.4 (75bhp): 106mph, 0-60 13.5 sec, 44.1mpg
    1.6 8v (100bhp): 117mph, 0-60 10.9 sec, 37.2mpg
    1.6 16v (105bhp): 118mph, 10.5 sec, 39.8mpg
    1.8 16v (125bhp): 125mph, 0-60 9.9 sec, 34mpg
    1.8T GTi (150bhp): 134mph, 0-60 8.5 sec, 36.2mpg
    2.0 GTi (115bhp): 121mph, 0-60 10.2 sec, 35.8mpg
    2.3 V5 (170bhp): 134mph, 0-60 8.8 sec, 30.4mpg
    2.3 V5 (170bhp, 2001-): 134mph, 0-60 8.2 sec, 32.1mpg
    2.8 V6 4MOTION (204bhp): 146mph, 0-60 7.1 sec, 25.7mpg
    R32 3.2 (240bhp): 154mph, 0-60 6.4 sec, 24.6mpg
    and for the record I have a 205 GTI, but wouldn't want a 106 or a golf.

if the figures are right they are slow that would explain why my rs turbo pissed all over 2.0 gti would of thought they were alot quicker i would of thought a 2.0 gti would be at least 160 bhp

I think you misunderstand here, both the 1.8n/a and the 1.8t are GTi's (Grand tourer injections) as is the 2.0

The 125bhp 1.8n/a was not in production for long as it was replaced by the 115bhp 2.0 and the 150bhp 1.8t. I have a 1.8t and I would imagine this would be the only model that could beat the 106 gti as it's a nippy little car with it's 1.6 16v swapped in a tin foil body. I would imagine a 1.6 golf would have no chance although there are two variants of the 1.6, an 8v and 16v
    fcuk it
