dell xp home edition

got a dell inspiron laptop off mate i tried to reload xp home edition which i bunred to cd from the laptop or restore backup cd its called. after install it say to log on u must register with microsoft first by phone or internet some sort of serial number 9 little white blocks, i cant get past this screen. i tried again to put cd xp pro in and now i cant format or get round this problem any help or have i buggered this laptop

Its the key mate, check on the pc or cd's for a sticker with the number on it. I will not load unless you have a number there.

my inspiron has an xp home label on the bottom.

My Inspiron has a Home Edition licence underneath. Soon as I got my Dell I scrubbed it and installed a Dell Version of Windows XP Pro SP2. Never needed to enter any licence numbers.
