flumps post should have sorted it, however you might be better disabling the WFW service itself..

    start > run > services.msc

Scroll down to Windows Firewall and double click the entry, change "startup type" from "automatic" (or "started") to "disabled".

(note, that will disable ICS at the same time)

You sure it is not that you need an dedicated lpr port enabled? Goto control panel>add/remove win components>other print services>unix printing for windows. Make sure the checkbox is ticked, then it might ask for your win disk to install some files. When you now go to add a port, you should have lpr port in the drop-down list

Sorry mate, looks like it materialised as a service in SP2, not SP1a

Just noticed you said lpt port, not lpr d'oh! The firewall will not make any difference to a lpt port. Are you using a bi-directional parallel cable?(for 2 way communication). When you tried it in usb, was it plugging into a hub or straight into the back of the pc?(might be cutting down the power on an un-powered hub) Try going into services.msc and stopping/restarting the print spooler service.

Uninstall the printer driver and reinstall, might be worth going to the printers maker website and seeing if there is an updated driver
