Help Reinstall XP USB 2.0 drivers?

    Background....

My PC has USB 2.0 and I have been using USB 2.0 devices on it for some time.

Then one day my PC sudddenly stopped reconising USB 2.0 devices "Device uknown"

    Diag's....

Tried various USB 2.0 devices (from camera to hub) - all fail "Device unknown"

Tried USB 1 devices in same ports - all work fine.

Tried USB 2.0 devices on another computer - all work fine

    Things attempted...

Checked for XP updates - none

Removed ALL USB related devices both physically and in device manager... including the open host controller.
    Rebooted let windows re-detect everything.
Pluged USB 2.0 a device back in... still the same error (bugger!)

    Conclusion...

My USB2 drivers are fubar? The only way out I know is to reinstall windows (which i don't wanna do).

    Question...

Is there anyway I can refresh my USB2.0 drivers from the XP disk without doing a total re-install?

    System info....

Windows XP SP2 with full udates
The USB controller is a SIS 7001
The mobo hasn't got its own drivers... all the drivers are from the XP install

    Hi DG

You might find help here .......

    http://www.usbman.com/Guides/SiS%20U...d%20Tricks.htm

I wonder if trying "The Clean up device in safe mode" suggestion would be worth while, about 1/2 way down the page.

Go back to a restore point before they stopped working.

Is SP2 integrated in to your installation CD?

Thanks for your input guys however, I am now certain that I have an weird ass mobo hardware problem.

I tried a few things in that link that stevie suggested. I didn't get anyware. So... I dug out an old hard drive, formated it an did a fresh install of WinXP sp2 (yes it is intergrated)

After the install the problem is still the same. It is very wierd. The Mobo has 2 x usb 1.1 and 2 x usb 2.0.
If you stick a USB 1.1 in any of the ports (1.1 or 2.0), they work fine.
If you stick a USB 2.0 device in any of the ports (1.1 or 2.0) it comes up "device unknown" (and treats it as an error)

The mobo is jumperless (so its not that). The ports are hard soldered to the board (so its not a wire issue). I have reset the bios, just in case it was that but to be honest there is no USB type options in the bios.

So after a completely fresh install of XP I can only conclude the mobo is fubar?

    P.s. Sniper
Couldn't restore because I aways turn that option off (haven for viruses). To be honest I don't think it would have solved the problem anyway.

    Karma to all

I agree , if you've re-installed and that didn't cure it then restore wouldn't do a lot , what about flashing the BIOS ? have you checked the motherboards website

Did you also flash the BIOS?
If you don't get anywhere, try here, also their Q&A Forum, there seems to be people there posting with similar experiences.

I had a similar error when a USB device didn't make a full connection, so I don't know if it is a driver problem. I fixed by fixing the connection (it was a usb to rj45 extension lead.

again cheers for the advice lads.

I forgot to mention I flashed the bios yesterday. There wasn't a newer bios version, so I downloaded and reflashed the current version (just in case it was corrupt)... It made no difference.

As far as connections goes, there are no leads involved. The two USB 1.1 ports are hard soldered to the Mobo in one block and the two USB 2.0 ports are hard soldered to the mobo in a seperate block. Both the USB1.1 ports AND the USB 2.0 ports are not reconising the USB2 devices... so I am pretty sure its not a connection error (I have tested 3 different USB 2.0 devices... Camera, USB stick and a hub)

I can't install any other USB2 drivers (because it says I have the latest installed)... and I can't try any USB2 patches (won't install "for SP1 only)

To be honest, I am certain now my mobo is shagged. I have had this mobo for almost two years... during which time I have installed win xp twice. Each time USB2 worked fine after a normal install. The fact that it isn't working now after a fresh install can only mean that something has failed?

    Just found a post elsewhere.

The suggested solution was to reduced the bus speed from 100 to 66, suposedly it got usb2 working but at the cost of a slower PC, something to do with a timing problem that MB suffers from.

You could always bung in a USB Card.

in that case I really have come to the end of the road.

My mobo has the cpu soldered in (rare but true).. all speed settings are locked out on the mobo, so I can't change the bus!

Looks like your well & truly knackered.

If this is the only problem then I guess its a USB card, about £6.
