Try frontpage to begin with then once you learn the basics of HTML go onto dreamweaver and use css etc. Then once you've mastered that, move onto notepad (or other text editor- vim, emacs etc).
Ye, it's shite, but for someome who has never come across HTML or website design before (Impression given from post) then it's probably going to be a lot easier than Dreamweaver to use initially...Originally Posted by marcode

why not use a page builder such as *spence runs and hides...*
The yahoo geocities one, if its just something simple and personal.
That will let you design a site and requires no real know how on web design.
Otherwise there are many a program that let you design the site look and layout in a 'designer' form, and writes all the HTML for you.
such as IBM Websphere page builder (only one i culd think off )
Depends on what the website is for, if it's for commercial purposes then pay someone who knows what they are doing to build it.
If it's just a personal one then use whatever you can get your hands on, frontpage is easy to use but a place in hell will be reserved for you if you decide to use it. Whereas dreamweaver does have a learning curve but is worth the effort.
imo best way for somone to actually learn something is to start with notepad (or maybe a specific html editor that will let you do automatic tags and whatnot).. using front page might produce a site, but itll be pish, and u wont actually learn much.Originally Posted by John Keymer
what sort of site are you after ?
I recently installed wordpress on my server, to give me a blog, it's reasonably easy to install, you need mysql and php tho. It's got loads of themes, plugins etc, I've only just started using but I've moved all the content over (bar some images which will moved this weekend) within a few hours. There's an admin tool which you do everything through.
I think they also provide the service on their sites if you don't have your own server to install on.

My site is http://www.littlemartin.com/, like I said literally a couple of hours to put it together
Download my latest breaks and electro mixes or listen to Sellout Breaks FM
Good place to start:
www.w3schools.com
just whip out notepad and do an html tutorial online. if you cant understand html you are too stupid to write webpages in the first place
i got a book designed to teach kids html when i was 12/13 and put together my first website, book basically taught you to dive straight in with notepad and it's the best way to learn.
if you like colour coding and other such easyness you could download gVim, a very good text editor that colour codes your code so its easier to read. it has a full GUI but also accepts standard vim text commands which you could learn if you were that way inclined, making it even quicker.
thats pretty much irrelevant though because notepad is more than powerful enough to make a website
