Hands down SFII all the way!

I spent a LOT of my youth playing both games, in the arcade and at home - and at other peoples homes, I made sure they had a md or a snes before I went.

(Was going to write more, but just see kjun, flumper and 2die4 for pretty much what I would have said. )

SF II pissed all over MK. MK was for people who were sick of getting hammered by proper gamers

As for the best 2D fighter EVER, it's a toss up between Real Bout Fatal Fury Special or Waku Waku 7 on the Neo Geo. Unparalleled depth of gameplay, sumptuous graphics and the knowledge that when you lost a fight it was your fault, you'd not been cheated by poorly programmed enemy AI.

And as for alleged 3D fighters, pfft, I've shit 'em. Tekken, Soul Edge/Calibur, D.O.A, Virtua Fighter etc all work primarily on a 2D plain. Just because they're polygon based doesn't make them 3D. As a fighting game purist, for my money the only true 3D fighters were the Toh Shin Den games on the PSX and Saturn.

The only thing the Toss Shin Den games were is well named...

And of the others mentioned, Virtua Fighter stands out above all the others as a fighting game gem, the others are fun but not in the same league.

It's a tough call for me but I think Way Of The Exploding Fist just about takes a close first over Barry McGuigan's Boxing.

All the rest are just pale imitations.

I've gone for MK...I find it more playable for longer.
