Tech migrating to another ISP - help please

hi all, thinking of moving from plus.net to pipex as plus only give you 20gb downloads per month during peak times and manage your account if you go past that..

what i was wondering was if i didnt want any downtime at all could i cancel plus.net after i get connected to pipex? as in i can give plus.net there 30day notice right now and sign up to pipex..

any advice woudl be greatly appreciated ladss

I'll also take advice for any other isp.

Pipex customer support is absolutely terrible - if you have a problem then you're pretty much fucked!

apply to your existing ISP for a MAC code so you can migrate to another ISP but inform them you dont want a cease your account untill the migration has successfully completed.

once MAC code obtained , just sign with new ISP and there should be a place to pop in your MAC code in the application.

this should minimise the downtime of your connection on switch over as all you will need to do is pop in your new details of new ISP into router / modem and maybe reboot it

kracken: so that is possible then? plus.net require me to give them 1 month period of notification. So I guess I could do that then.

another thing is, anyone else wanna ridicule/praise plus.net?

    cheers

you cant really do anything untill you get the MAC code from existing ISP , and the 30 days notice you say is just to get one more months cash out of you ( be warned tho , they may ask you to pay a fee for the priveledge ) . checkout plusnet forum on ADSLGuide for user probs / feedback

OK, cancelled with plus.net and I'm waiting for MAC code, so after that I will also be going to Zen, they seem a different/better style of company and a few people that I have asked now says they dont deal with customer services because they never get any problems! which is a good thing ofcourse.

But, lets hope I get minimum downtime...so do you reckon that I shouldn't get any downtime at all then, kracken as I am giving my MAC code to zen to do all the hard work?

i didnt say you wouldnt get any downtime , but the issuing a MAC code to help with the migration should reduce the downtime to a minimum as long as your existing ISP releases your details etc .

once you get your login details from your new ISP (after you get your MAC code) , try the details in router / modem . Or wait till your existing connection doesnt work any more and put them in then.

there will be sum occasions where both login details ( old and new ISP ) may work , but this will just be for a small transition period

Kracken: ahhhh, cool. thats good then because plus.net require a 30 day notice period and zen says they take around 7 days in total to do it with mac so in theory I shouldn't have any down time...but hey, we all know how these companies work...

    cheers for the advice tho

Just an update, plus.net eventually gave me my MAC code as I had requested it off them.

They also asked how they could retain my custom I told them that if they dropped their SUP (sustainable usage policy) and made it more fairer. There reply was:
As stated in our vision for 2006 , that we will be reviewing the Peak time management system, Details will be released when any changes to this system have been made.

    Regards,

    Michael Wheeler

So I just told them I wanted my MAC code ASAP and they gave me it a few hours later and after a bit of deliberation, zen seem the best, albeit a little more expensive but hey, you pay for quality and hopefully thats what I will get. It's a 1month contract so I can always change if its pish!

Hey tam9, im currently with plus.net and ive just been put on level 1 management which has p*ssed me off. Im on their monthly contract and was wondering when they gave you the mac code how long notice did you have to give as you said it was 30days but you were transferring to zen in 7 days.. Does this mean anything?

Said this a few times to people leaving plusnet (should be a sticky..lol)
Change your credit card details with them and cancel your direct debit. I had a problem where they kept taking payments and they wouldnt refund me either...

I read the suggestions they said to find a solution to their management plan and it said to leave!! Lol now thats great customer retentions!
