    Default European Football

Can somebody tell me what positions premier clubs need to finish to get into europe.

Not something i have had to worry about before, but maybe if we dream hard enogh this may be our year.

I know that the top 4 go into the champion league, but what league positions get into the UEFA Cup.

And what happens if say Man U win the FA cup or Chelsea win the Champion league.

    Cheers

Buahahahaha, you've no chance, you'll be lucky to finish mid table.

Never say never, footballs a funny old game

Everyone said that we would be lucky to avoid relegation this year but look at us now.

Three teams promoted, one in sixth position, one in a cup final and one getting relegated, who would have thought it.

So who knows what will happen, every dog has its day, just look at Arseholenal.

i think that 5th and 6th are auto in the uefa then if a team that qualifies for the cl wins the domestic cups those places get free'd up

so potentially top 8 league places go into europe

however the cup places could go to the finalists (runners up) if the winners are in europe so best to finish top 6

First to fourth go into the Champions league (however 3rd and 4th play in last round of qualification first)

5th is an automatic UEFA cup spot.

Winners of the League cup get a UEFA cup place and winners of the FA CUP

However there is a difference between the cups if a champions league qualifier wins it.

If (for example) Man U beat wigan in the Carling cup, then the UEFA cup spot goes to the league (for whoever finishes in 6th place).

But if Man U win the FA cup then the UEFA cup spot goes to the runner up in the FA final.

If the runner up is also a Champions league qualifier then the UEFA cup spot goes to 7th place in the premier league.

So you can (in theory) finish 7th!

However if you plan on getting into europe then your best hope is to finish 6th support Man U in the Carling Cup final!

Nothing will happen to what i've just said if Chelsea win the CL as they will qualify because of their league position.

However if the league finishes with the current top four (Man U, chelsea, Totenham and Liverpool) and then IF (and this is a very big IF) the arse win the champions league.

Then they get a Champions league spot (because of all the scouse whinging a new rule for winners was brought in last year) So all the UEFA cup places below them shuffle down one (as there will be now FIVE champions league places).

Hahah but the chances of that happening are as likley as Sunderland staying up!

Hmmmm there are still 39 additional points left for sunderland if they win ALL their last 13 games.... so it IS actually possible Sunderland could stay up!

    OK sorry bad example!

Hadn't they changed that now and closed the door to avoid confusion again? I'm sure it's now decided by the country in question's FA to decide whether 4th place or the CL winners get the nod for next season's CL.

I would love to see West Ham in Europe - they have had some amazing results this season, and would really like to see what they could do in the UEFA cup - would be very entertaining i think.

.....Yep so if the arse were to win the CL and finish say sixth, then fourth place in the premiership would be top UEFA cup spot.......and it's not the whinging scouse (well not the anfield side) just some little team that finished in the incorrcect place !!! I don't know if this is the old rule but the only thing i could find was

According to UEFA regulations 2006 (the current rules on the uefa site) Article 1.04 states the holders can, at the request of the domestic FA, be entered into the Champions league and then 4th place MUST go into the UEFA cup.

Maybe its like this for financal reasons. Basically if the pot split 5 ways instead of 4 meant everyone would have got less if Everton had qualified for the group stage this year!

the top 4 go into the champions league then 5th, 6th, and 7th go into the uefa cup and any of the domestic cup winners go into the uefa aswell.
also any team who goes into the inter-toto cup and wins will also qualify for the uefa cup.

haha i don't know where you read that mate!

the 3 big football nations (spain/italy/england) get 4 champions league places and 3 uefa cup places. Its up to them how they distribute the UEFA spots. We assign them as

First to fourth go into the Champions league (however 3rd and 4th play in last round of qualification first)
