I will be in London on thursday evening and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good restaurant. Not mcdonnalds , not some macro cuisine shite or a place they throw you out after an hour either

Whereabouts in London mate? Also are you fussy about type of cuisine or do you have a preference?
If you are concerned about paying too much, you can get some good deals on here:
Top Table
Gaucho Grill is mega but expensive

An old favorite of mine:
Bank ALdwych
or
Chez Gerard
The nearest Gaucho is at Picadilly.
Bank is good, but seems to have dropped down quality a little of late. I do like Chez Gerard, but normally when I'm not paying, but obviously its very good for Covent Garden!
My fave restaurant at the moment is Tas - http://www.tasrestaurant.com/find_us.asp - you get great food, good sized portions, and a lively atmosphere with friendly staff.
Yes, I agree it does seems a little hurried in there sometimes and it's not as good as it was. I find it's better to eat later in there as otherwise you tend to get some shoppers etc coming in and it doesn't have the same ambience as with the later dining crowd.
Not the best restaurant I've been to by any stretch but a good meal without being too trumpy.
Rocket is quite nice also and there is one near bank or another near Oxford Street/Mayfair .

Chez Gerard looks like the place for me.
Thanks all for the suggestions.

Yep, I remember a bird wanted to take me to one in manchester, and I seen one in richmond and putney as well.
Yeah there is a wagamama's near to covent garden.
There are loads of restaurants in Charlotte St , some are a bit pricey, but some good ones there too.
My fave at the mo is the Cleveland Kitchen in Cleveland St, but it's a bit far away from covent Garden. It's near to Great Portland Street tube.

Arg i cant remember the name of this place in covent gardens, something with the word mile/yard in i think, might not be though, anyway its a good place, more a trendy bar but the food is great value because they hope to make the money on the drinks.
If i remember the name i'll give you a shout.
I wouldn't come to London and go to a chain restaurant that can be found all over the country. The op did say not McDonalds!
I will reconmend Belgo's in covent garden. (Neils Yard close by) Erad, you mean here? Or a place dirently in Neil yard? They are all veggie i thought?
A belgium place. Beer menue bigger than the food menue.
Good wholesome food.
I went in the other day
2 startes
2 Mains
4 Shots
3 Beers
£60 including thier service charge.
This was middle road. You can do it cheaper and of course more expensive.
Other places
Cottons - Camdn Lock - West Indian, goat curry and the like. Whats more important is the few hundred different types of rum they have in thier rum bar
Want another
Spiga, along Wardour Street, Pizza place, i think a little over priced but we have had many a good time.
One to avoid, there is a Cuban place on Wardour Street. Horribly over priced and food not very good at all. Trust me i eat a lot of different cuisines.
There are a few good places down Wardour street and being close (RIGHT IN MORE LIKE) Soho plenty of great Bars (convent garden very near by) Try Lab, coctail bar, very impressive menue
I really could go on.
If you are feelin adventerous there is La hore, off of Commercial Road, looks like a dodgy Kebab bar, BUT VERY GOOD. Do nto be put of by the looks.
I woudl steer clear of Brick Lane. I love my Curry and tried very hard to find a good decent place but always been bitterly disapointed.
Top Table, you coudl Try Top Of The Town. Biggest (and yes one of the best) Chinese places to eat. You can have silly english chinese food or proper chinese grub.
If you do liek proper chinese grub then Youeng Cheng (also in China Down on Wardour Street) mains about 5-8. Very good i woudl reconmend Belly Pork, Roast Duck and Rice with Choi Sum or Pak Choi for Veg.
If you come down to London Bridge end look up a Pub called The Rake, over 300 different beers available. My local as it happens (well 3.5 miles away but so damn good i made it my local!) No food, however there is a fantastic Fish place near by, the name escpaes me.
Any more.... plenty but those can wait for another time. I think i have covered a suitbale pallete range.
Cheers.....Q
QfanatiQ, wasn't that, seeing as last time i had a steak in there lol, i'm probably way off with the mile/yard thing but the names on the tip of my tounge at the moment, really cant remember it though
Do not forget the Ivy.
Clearly a lot of money.. but do nto be fooled by table booking. You normally wait A LONG TIME and people forget thay had tables booked and thingschange.
If you are going make sure you are VERY WELL PRESENTED. Great food but big price and to be honest rather pretensious.
Cheers.....Q
Do ont worry, we are very close to Google Brain Plug in, all your thoughts easily tracked!
An off the wall one.
Maoz, Falafel, Old compton Street. SImple, cheap, wholesome and GOOD!
DO not go to Any burger bars, Eds Diner, SLIME. Gourment Burger, over priced dry beed and finally another GBC, good burger company (or something) over priced and not all that good.
