Been going through my bookmarks and thought I would share them...
Where to start with building a website?
Start with HTML. You can build a site using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML - born from Standard Generalized Markup Language - SGML). This has been the standard for many years and has served us well. It's the foundation for all budding web builders.
Then learn CSS. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) allow complete and total control over the style of a hypertext document. CSS saves time. You can change the feel of your entire site by changing a few lines within a stylesheet. To date, most examples of neat tricks and hacks have been demonstrated by structurists and coders. Designers had yet to make their mark. CSS gives control to the designer. CSS is esential for serious builders.
XHTML - HTML combined with XML (XML is a markup language where everything has to be marked up correctly, which results in "well-formed" documents) gives us XHTML. Today's market consists of different browser technologies, some browsers run the internet on computers, and some browsers run the internet on mobile phones and hand helds. The aforementioned do not have the resources or power to interpret a "bad" markup language. Therefore - by combining HTML and XML, and their strengths, we got a markup language that is useful now and in the future - XHTML.
XHTML pages can be read by all XML enabled devices and while waiting for the rest of the world to upgrade to XML supported browsers, XHTML gives you the opportunity to write "well-formed" documents now, that work in all browsers and that are backward browser compatible.
Here are a bunch of links to help you on your way. I have include a few in each section, I find it good to read from a different perspective.
