    Default Silent PSU

Can anyone recommend a silent/quiet PSU, i've got a cheap Maplin 400w shitter in my machine and its pissing me right off how loud it is.

I've heard people mention "ultra queit" ones but they all say "quiet" on the box.

A friend said he had one that was so quiet you couldn't tell that the PC was even on but this was years ago.

Anyone recommend a good brand to go for??

    I think I need about 350 - 400w (2x DVD drives and 3x HDD's)

    Cheers

Using a Hiper Type R 580W Modular PSU here and the only time I hear the two fans it has is when I actually switch the PC off in the early hours just before I go to bed (the fans continue to run for a couple of minutes after power off to draw excess heat from the PSU).

In normal daytime use in a normal room, there is no way you will hear the fans.

Will be interested to see the responses - my PC is noisy as f*ck... really need to open it up to make sure it is the PSU and not the CPU fan...

Is 350/400W really enough for all of that?

I was thinking the same, I remember a website you could enter in all your PC details and it would recommend a PSU, just can't find the URL!

other stuff, especially gfx cards gobble power now, its not like you can buy one below 350watt anyway, its just the cheapo ones fail to deliver what they claim, along with poor voltages which can also cause problems.
Hiper PSUs are the dogs, i have a type r, basically the same as the one above without modularity Its also very very quiet.

thats side does it for you, but you're best going for a quality branded psu rather than something like qtec - also look at the max power drain from each rail

I love my type-r.. so quiet and shiny

Really an excellent PSU, cables could a been a bit longer though as joining them looks a tad untidy in a windowed case.. If you browse the photos you will see I had to join a few off my HD cause the supplied cable was to short to reach my GFX card.

*BTW it was a right faf on uploading pics, I understand files sizes but had to bring them below 100kb and 640x480 to upload them, also why can I not upload portrait format pics?

one photo (middle) will need rotating 90deg to view it..

    Hi,
Take a look at the PC World website, the black Type-R 580W is on offer there for quite a while now - £59.99 (web price only). So order online and pick up in your local store. If it is not available in your local branch (online choice), it may be possible to talk the sales person into giving you the web discount (depending if they really have it in stock or not). I was succesful in the past with my purchases this way if I spotted a good bargain (on other offers, eBay etc. don't forget the postage of it...).

    Good luck.
    Greetings :)

    Hogwart

CPU and GFX fans including those tiny northbridge fans are no doubt a big offender, so if you have any take a good look and decide if its worth changing them too. I changed mine for Akasa variable speed models and to be truthful, Im so happy I did, combined with the silent Hiper my PC is now so quiet.

Take into consideration any case fans, even quiet ones can be noisy if going thru side case vent covers, as I find with my Xblade case, no vent covers they are silent when running, watch your fingers mind.
