England went out of the World Cup 3-1 on penalties after their quarter-final with Portugal ended 0-0.
England lost skipper David Beckham to injury just after half-time and Wayne Rooney was sent off after 62 minutes for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.
They battled on bravely for the rest of normal time and extra-time with 10 men to take the game to a shoot-out.
But Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher missed to end their hopes and Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign.
England crash out of the World Cup in agonising circumstances after their best performance of the tournament. Big Phil scores his hat-trick against Svennis and Portugal are through to a semi-final against Brazil or France.
England 1-3 Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo walks forward to put Portugal into the semi-finals. He kisses the ball, stutters in the run up and scores, sending Paul Robinson the wrong way.
England 1-2 Portugal
Next man on the block for England is Jamie Carragher. He takes it quickly and scores but is called back to re-take it. His second effort is saved, Ricardo parrying it on to the bar.
England 1-2 Portugal
Helder Postiga nervelessly runs up to score and put Portugal ahead.
England 1-1 Portugal
Steven Gerrard steps up but his effort is saved by Ricardo to his left. Again, not a great strike from England.
England 1-1 Portugal
The next man up is Petit, who will be suspended from any semi-final Portugal may get to. He misses, dragging his effort wide.
England 1-1 Portugal
Owen Hargreaves, who has played so magnificently, scores to level things up. Ricardo got a hand to it but not enough.
England 0-1 Portugal
Former Newcastle man Hugo Viana steps up. Paul Robinson goes the wrong way but it's a miss for Portugal as the effort cannons off the right post.
England 0-1 Portugal
England's first penalty is taken by Frank Lampard. It is saved by Ricardo to his left. It was not the best of penalties.
England 0-1 Portugal
Simao Sabrosa steps up for the first penalty. After a lengthy wait he scores. Paul Robinson, in front of banks of England fans, guessed the right way but couldn't get to it.
1834 BST: Portugal are in a huddle. If England have a shocking World Cup record in penalty shoot-outs they have beaten an Iberian country on penalties before in a major tournament - in Euro 96 when Terry Venables' side beat Spain.
1833 BST: Svennis has made his decisions. This could be the start of the closing chapter of his career as England coach.
1832 BST: Players mill about on the pitch as the key decisions as to who will take the 10 spot-kicks are decided. Paul Robinson looks in relaxed conversation with goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence.
"I've taken a penalty against Paul Robinson and I can tell you he's a big unit."
Alan Shearer, BBC Sport TV
Feature: How to conquer penalties
"England have been magnificent. They defended well, kept the ball well and have been a different class in the face of some Portuguese play-acting."Terry Butcher, BBC Five Live Sport
FULL-TIME That's it. Strap yourselves in for penalties.
120 mins: There will be one minute added on. Paul Robinson's long clearance goes all the way through to Ricardo. Here come Portugal again. Maniche caps a period of pressure with a wild shot over the bar.
119 mins: Penalties are almost upon us as Portugal attack for one last time. Miguel's cross from the right squirts all the way through the box to Jamie Carragher who turns it out for a corner.
117 mins: Owen Hargreaves and John Terry combine to steal the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo on the edge of the area. Svennis is having a quiet word with Steve McClaren on the bench and the upshot is a change. Jamie Carragher replaces Aaron Lennon.
"Thoughts are turning to who might take penalties if the deadlock is not broken. Owen Hargreaves told the media in Baden-Baden this week: "I don't believe a German can take a better penalty than an Englishman." His theory may be just about to be put to the test. Lampard, Gerrard, Crouch, Terry and Hargreaves must be in the frame with Beckham and Rooney out of the equation." Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
114 mins: Petit lines up a shot. It skips off the turf just in front of Paul Robinson but the keeper is solidly behind it. John Terry goes down with cramp and Svennis looks on anxiously. The pause in play allows Big Phil to bark some more instructions to his team. He likes what he sees and gives his team the thumbs up.
113 mins: This is breathless stuff. Peter Crouch collects a long ball on the edge of the area. He juggles, brings it down and then steps on the ball with two defenders in attendance.
112 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo climbs high for a cross but directs his header straight at Paul Robinson.
111 mins: Aaron Lennon races to the byeline with three white shorts in the box but the diminutive flyer just over runs the ball and it is out for a goal-kick.
110 mins: Portugal are camped on the edge of the England area, but again the rearguard holds firm and clears. Ricardo Carvalho is yellow carded for a foul on Gary Neville.
107 mins: Helder Postiga puts the ball in the back of the net but it is ruled out for offside. Cristiano Ronaldo supplied the cross for the header, but while Portugal's fans went wild, Big Phil knew it was no goal. It is about the calmest he has been all afternoon.
106 mins: Nuno Valente comes from behind and tackles Aaron Lennon in the box. No penalty, although the full-back threw a fearful galnce at the referee. Owen Hargreaves is booked for complaining about the decision to the referee.
1812 BST: England re-start.
1811 BST: All 21 players out on the pitch take on copious amounts of liquid as the teams turn around.
"No complaints about England's attitude and application here. They are giving as good as they are getting with only 10 men, but it is a game that will be taking a lot out of them mentally and physically. Ronaldo is still the big danger, but England are still well in the hunt for a semi-final place."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
HALF-TIME EXTRA-TIME: England are 15 minutes away from penalties. They have never won a penalty shoot-out at the World Cup.
104 mins: Maniche surges forward. On to Cristiano Ronaldo and then Miguel but Steven Gerrard's sliding tackle breaks up the move...temporarily. Ronaldo fires in a shot just over.
103 mins: Peter Crouch is working manfully in attack - well, more often than not on the halfway line - and wins a free-kick after holding off Fernando Meira. England do little with it.
102 mins: Gary Neville overlaps Aaron Lennon on the right. His cross is worked through to Peter Crouch but Fernando Meira clears as the England man attempts to go round him.
100 mins: John Terry heads Simao Sabrosa's cross from the right clear with Helder Postiga lurking in the box.
99 mins: England surge forward. Steven Gerrard is shepherded to the right but gets a cross. Miguel comes in with a decisive clearing header in front of Peter Crouch.
96 mins: Big Phil and Steve McClaren are having a gesticulating competition on the sidelines. The Brazilian wins on the wild eye stakes. The Englishman takes the honours for more structure in pointing. Who got their point across the better? Time will tell.
94 mins: Now it is England's turn to probe for an opening in attack. Peter Crouch cannot get anything behind his header when he meets Steven Gerrard's corner.
92 mins: It is all Portugal. They are playing keep ball on the edge of the England area. Petit finally fashions a shot but it is well over.
RATER POLL: England have been heavily backed to make it through extra-time, with 70% of you fancying them to keep Portugal at bay - and possibly to even nick a winner!
1756 BST: The World Cup rollercoaster ride goes on for England fans as extra-time starts.
"The ill-feeling against Ronaldo from England's fans is intense. That move to Real Madrid may be an option after all. England's best hope? Still to get Aaron Lennon on the ball against Nuno Valente. There is joy to be had there."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
"The two centre backs have been magnificent - absolute rocks in the heart of the defence and Aaron Lennon made a difference when he came on.
Alan Hansen, BBC Sport TV
"I'd prefer that Brazil face England in the semi-final. Scolari is very dangerous."
Brazilian journalist Emerson Vicente
"Peter Crouch has done remarkably well. He kept the ball very well and I'm quite comfortable knowing that we could go to penalties here because Portugal have had hardly anyone up front." Alan Shearer, BBC Sport TV
1753 BST: Svennis has got rid of his jacket and is doing the rounds with his players. Steven Gerrard is receiving a rub down on his calves and Owen Hargreaves is in deep discussion with Steve McClaren. Big Phil? What do you reckon? More pointing and gesticulating.
1751 BST: The last time England went to extra-time in the World Cup finals was against Argentina in 1998. Then David Beckham was sent off for a petulant foul against Diego Simone early in the second half but don't expect any good omens. We know what happened. England went on to lose on penalties. If you want a good omen England have never lost with Peter Crouch on the pitch.
END OF NORMAL TIME: The whistle goes and another 30 minutes it is then.
90 + 3 mins: The second corner is well cleared and Portugal break. Panic stations with England racing back but there is no way through with Owen Hargreaves putting in the initial challenge to check Portugal's advance down the right.
90 + 1 min: Rio Ferdinand strides forward and that eases the pressure on the defence. The move he instigates ends with a corner. Ricardo punches it clear but Owen Hargreaves snaffles it. His cross causes panic in the box and John Terry's shot on the turn is blocked over for a corner.
89 mins: England are playing out normal time deep in their own half. There will be three more minutes to last until extra-time.
"Portugal are desperate to stretch the game but Ashley Cole is holding firm and Crouch has done well since his introduction. The stadium is quieter now - it's not boredom it's tension."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
88 mins: The boos mean Cristiano Ronaldo's on the ball. He sends in two inviting crosses in quick succession from the right. The first is over Helder Postiga and Frank Lampard cuts out the second.
86 mins: A third and final change for Portugal. Helder Postiga, the scourge of England at Euro 2004, replaces Luis Figo. The former Tottenham man will lead the line. Simao Sabrosa takes on the captain's armband.
85 mins: Maniche collects the ball in space but blazes his long-range effort wide of the target.
82 mins: Up the other end another direct Aaron Lennon run earns a free-kick in a central position. Frank Lampard's drilled effort is parried by Ricardo and Lennon's follow up lacks the pace to beat the goalkeeper.
81 mins: Hugo Viana's back on his feet and fires in a shot after being played in by Miguel. Paul Robinson saves the low effort at the second attempt.
80 mins: The game threatens to boil over. Hugo Viana goes down in the centre circle but England refuse to play the ball out. Portugal's players are incensed. England's are angered by what they see as play-acting from their opponents.
78 mins: A thundering tackle by Rio Ferdinand on Nuno Valente in the box. It comes seconds after Paul Robinson claws away a shot. Insult is added to injury for the Portuguese player. He rolls off the pitch for treatment and is clattered by a mis-directed long-range shot from Petit.
75 mins: Hope springs eternal for England. They are not playing as if they are a man short and a new study by the German Institute for Economic Research shows that red cards that are handed out after half-time do not have a negative impact on the penalised team.
74 mins: When Big Phil and Svennis locked horns at the 2002 World Cup it was Brazil who went down to 10 men. Scolari made some calculating changes on that occasion to win and now he makes a second substitution here. Hugo Viana, once of Newcastle, comes on for Tiago.
73 mins: Steven Gerrard breaks down the left but Peter Crouch cannot keep up with play and is well short of meeting the cross.
72 mins: Gary Neville hooks Luis Figo's cross from the right clear with Paul Robinson rooted to his line.
70 mins: Owen Hargreaves goes on a curving run to the left corner flag but his cross is heavy and goes out for a throw on the right.
67 mins: Three rolls and a glance at the referee from Cristiano Ronaldo after a late challenge from Frank Lampard. He wins a free-kick but Portugal fail to make much of it.
64 mins: England shuffle their hand and Joe Cole, who is so often the man who is sacrificed, makes way for Peter Crouch.
63 mins: In the turmoil of the dismissal Portugal bring on Simao Sabrosa for Pauleta. It means Portugal will not play with a recognised forward.
RATER POLL: Wayne Rooney has just cost England a place in the semi-finals by getting himself sent off - that's the opinion of 60% of you.
"Uproar as Wayne Rooney is sent off. Even David Beckham has recovered enough from his injury and tears to come to the sidelines to berate the referee. Several England players are unhappy that Portugal's players, led by Rooney's Manchester United team-mate Ronaldo, pleaded for the young striker a red card. England's fans feel a sense of real injustice and turn up the volume."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
"I'm not so certain what he was sent off for. Was it for pushing Ronaldo who became involved quite unecessarily or was it for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho's private parts? I think England are still capable of winning."
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport
62 mins: RED CARD Frustration gets the better of Wayne Rooney and he is sent off. He wrestles for the ball with Ricardo Carvalho on the halfway line and stamps on the defender's testicles. The Chelsea man goes off for treatment and soon returns. Rooney just goes off.
60 mins: Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo looks to be getting as fed up with Portugal's players diving as much as the England fans. He waves play on as Maniche goes down but England's break fails to end with a shot on goal.
58 mins: A nice exhibition in stepovers from Joe Cole but no end product. Play switches to the right and Aaron Lennon shows him how to do it with a direct run. The substitute causes chaos in Portugal's ranks with a scintilating run, Wayne Rooney takes a swing at a pass and misses before Joe Cole blazes the ball over the bar.
56 mins: The game is bubbling up nicely as we approach the final third of the 90. Miguel pokes the ball away off Steven Gerrard's toes to concede a corner. Ricardo claims the ball with ease from the corner.
54 mins: David Beckham's in tears on the touchline. On the field his replacement in the number seven shirt at Old Trafford is furious as a decision goes against him. Cristiano Ronaldo has already dived twice but there is still no yellow card despite that show of dissent.
53 mins: Shot number 24 on goal from Frank Lampard and what a chance. He meets Steven Gerrard's corner in space at the back post but his volley goes into the ground and bounces over.
51 mins: A first change for England and, in what may be his final match in charge, Sven-Goran Eriksson substitutes captain David Beckham. Gary Neville takes the armband.
50 mins: There is an urgency about England. Wayne Rooney plays in David Beckham on the edge of the area and his chip into the middle strikes Nuno Valente on the arm. There is no penalty despite England's claims.
47 mins: Nuno Valente clatters into David Beckham and Aaron Lennon springs up from the dug out to warm up. The England skipper is hobbling and has problems with his right ankle.
1702 BST: There are no changes and Portugal get us going again as a rendition of "God Save The Queen" echoes around the ground.
1700 BST: England are first out for the second half, a full two minutes before Portugal.
"England's bright start faded towards half-time, with Portugal impressive in possession. Eriksson simply must find a way of getting more support to Wayne Rooney in the second half. More is required from David Beckham, while Gary Neville is struggling desperately in the stiflingly hot conditions. Not as bad as it could have been - but not as good either."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
"There is no spark out there. We haven't seen any of the midfielders pushing on and making runs and Wayne Rooney is completely isolated. David Beckham and Joe Cole have got to push on and support him."
Alan Shearer, BBC Sport TV
"There haven't been many chances but England threatened. It's nearly coming together in the attacking third, nearly, but not quite."
Terry Butcher, BBC Five Live Sport
"It will be easier to switch to a 4-4-2 formation. They need to play a system that the players know and like and keep it simple."
Alan Hansen, BBC Sport TV
HALF-TIME: There is nothing to separate the teams after the first 45 minutes.
45 mins: Shot number 23 of the tournament on goal from Frank Lampard. Ricardo is equal to the task and saves easily. The Chelsea man is joined at the top of list of players who have fired on goal without scoring by club team-mates Michael Ballack and Michael Essien. Hard hats could be the order of the day behind the goals at Stamford Bridge next season.
44 mins: From an England perspective hopefully the corner was a sighter. David Beckham lines up a free-kick after Petit fouls Joe Cole on the edge of the area. Again he fails to clear the first man crashing the ball into the wall. Petit's yellow card means he will miss Portugal's next match - should they prosper here.
43 mins: Owen Hargreaves is England's most advanced player and wins a corner on the left. David Beckham's corner fails to beat the first man.
42 mins: Tiago climbs high to head on goal but Paul Robinson is equal to the challenge clawing it away to his right. It was going wide anyway.
39 mins: Gary Neville is caught miles out of position as Portugal attack down the left. Luis Figo is the man to benefit and his whipped shot is just wide of Paul Robinson's left post.
"Gary Neville is facing a real test on his return from injury. Portugal appear to have targeted him and he has had to be rescued on occasions by England team-mates as Cristiano Ronaldo continues to pose a threat."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
38 mins: Steven Gerrard makes another attacking run and collects Ashley Cole's deep pass down the left flank. He gets to the byeline but nobody is in the box to meet his cross.
36 mins: Wherever Wayne Rooney goes Fernando Meira is by his side. The England striker drops deep inside his own half to see some ball and get rid of his Portuguese shadow. Pauleta is equally isolated as Portugal's lone striker.
34 mins: Rio Ferdinand goes route one but over hits the pass through to Steven Gerrard who had made a run in front of Wayne Rooney and behind the Portuguese defence.
29 mins: It is worth a reminder as to who else may miss a semi-final if they get booked. England duo Paul Robinson and Jamie Carragher came into the game with bookings. Portugal have five players walking the tightrope - Petit, Maniche, Nuno Valente, Luis Figo and Ricardo.
28 mins: Former Chelsea team-mates John Terry and Tiago jump for a high ball and both come crashing to earth in the centre circle with a bang. Terry is booked for the challenge and will miss the semi-final if England go through.
27 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo's shot is blocked by his Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand. It rebounds to the tricky winger who goes to ground easily under a challenge from Fank Lampard. The referee waves play on despite Ronaldo's protestations.
"England have started better than in their previous games but I'd like to see David Beckham and Joe Cole come inside a bit more. I don't think Miguel or Nuno Valente know how to play that inside space."
Graham Taylor, BBC Five Live Sport
24 mins: Big Phil prowls the touchline with menace. England play with patience deep in their own half. Svennis sits statuesque in the dug out.
21 mins: Frank Lampard must wish he was an inch or two taller. He storms into the box to get on the end of David Beckham's looped pass from the right but cannot quite reach it despite a sliding lunge.
"Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has brushed off comparisons with the more animated Luiz Felipe Scolari, suddenly emerges into the technical area to complain about his side's defending, but before too long has had enough of showing his feelings and returns to his seat."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
19 mins: Gary Neville strangely opts to give Cristiano Ronaldo acres of space on the left, although as he knows him so well from Manchester United perhaps he knows what he's up to. Ronaldo steps in on his right foot and shoots wide.
17 mins: Wayne Rooney plays a tight pass to Frank Lampard in the area but the Chelsea man's pull back from the right finds a Portuguese foot.
16 mins: Big Phil's back off his bench having a word with Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo. It is probably along the lines of "Why wasn't that a yellow card?" after seeing Owen Hargreaves foul Luis Figo. Hargreaves is catching quite a few ankles out there and very little ball at the moment.
14 mins: An air shot from Joe Cole on the edge of the area and England again look edgy in defence. Maniche latches on to the loose ball but his shot is blocked.
13 mins: Poor defending at the back from England. Luis Figo flights a free-kick in from the right, it evades everyone and clearly, to his surprise, reaches Gary Neville. The ricochet off his legs falls to Tiago but he cannot stab it beyond Paul Robinson.
"It's a cagey start, but England and their fans are encouraged by moments of uncertainty in Portugal's defence. You can sense Portugal's unease every time Wayne Rooney has the ball. His Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo looks to be suffering no ill-effects from his thigh injury."
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport in Gelsenkirchen
10 mins: Frank Lampard plays his defence into trouble and Cristiano Ronaldo chances his arm from distance. Another comfortable save, Paul Robinson going down low to his right.
9 mins: Wayne Rooney gathers a pass from Steven Gerrard with his back to goal. He has space to turn, does so and shoots on goal but it is easy for Ricardo.
7 mins: Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo comes sprawling off his line at full stretch to punch clear a David Beckham free-kick. Not elegant but effective. Big Phil's off the bench pointing. Svennis stays seated as the game settles into some early sort of shape.
6 mins: Ashley Cole is in an advanced position on the left and is lucky to earn a free-kick after dawdling on the ball and inviting what looked like a fair challenge from Petit.
3 mins: Now it is Portugal's turn to stroke the ball about. A first foul, Gary Neville blocking Cristiano Ronaldo. When these teams met in the 1966 semi-final there wasn't a foul in the opening 22 minutes.
2 mins: A slip at the back gifts Wayne Rooney an early sight of goal but his shot is blocked by Fernando Meira.
1 min: England get a good feel for the ball after kicking off. Portugal start with Luis Figo on the right and Cristiano Ronaldo on the left.
1600 BST: Portugal is England's oldest ally dating back to the Treaty of Windsor which was signed in 1386, but we can forget about any friendship for the next 90 minutes...at least.
