Default Toyota Yaris Warning Light Problem !

    Hello there,

I have a Toyota Yaris 1.0 cc, its a 1999 model. Yesterday a "Malifunction Warning Light" came up on the dashboard, i've checked the service manual and everything I could think of under the bonnet. But still have the warning light coming up.

I also searched on the net and found some rest procedures which are as follows:

Turn ignition key to 'ON' and press the odometer button until the display reads actual mileage... not Trip A or B.

    Turn ignition key to OFF.

Hold in the same button you used in step 1.

While holding the button in, turn ignition key to 'ON'.

The 'Maint Reqd' light should blink and go out.

But I have had no joy, my "Maint Reqd" does not blink and go out. Can anyone help me with this problem.

    Thanks in advance.

I may only be a girly... but you have not mentioned anything to do with any passed mileage correction. So have you actually considered the posibility that you may actually have a malifunction?

There hasn't been any milage correction done to the car, and niether is there a problem like misfiring or electrics. It also has new battery, so still don't know what the problem could be. The warning light is definately an engine management warning light and not a service light.

Just because there is no misfire and the car is running fine dont mean there is no probs I would get it onto a scanner and checked before any major damage is done

the warning light is there to tell you that the ecu (brain of the car) has had a dodgy reading from one of the sensors. Whether it is an actual fault with the engine which is causing the bad readings or whether it is a dodgy sensor can only be determined by hooking the car up to a diagnostics system.
Using the diagnostics system they can delete all the previous stored error codes from the ecu to see whether the problem is reoccuring.

Best thing to do is get it sorted just in case it is an engine problem

ps. also note that when the engine management light comes on in most cars they have a tendency to drop in to 'get you home' mode. The fuel consumption will rocket as the car drinks petrol like its going out of fashion and the cars performance will drop considerably.

spending £20 now is better than spending £2000 when the engine goes bang!

Think this thread needs to be moved to the main cars forum. Doesnt seem to be any mileage correction issues

What are the break pads like?, whats the clutch like? is there enough brake fluid in? i had a fault on my Celica, it came on and went off then bak on again loads of times, then i checked everything and it was low on brake fluid.

In a nutshell, just check everything, from wheel bolts to radio (well u know)

if you take it in to a garage it will cost you 20ish quid but they will be able to tell you straight away what the problem is depending on the fault codes they retrieve from the ecu.

Saves getting your hands dirty and wasting time on something that you'll most likely not find.

All Toyota's when they sense a problem will light up the engine management light. In most cases this is not something to be frightened of.

Have you noticed that you fuel consumption is higher than before? Is the exhaust tip blacker than usual?

Sounds like your lamda sensor has gone, they usually have a life of 5 years. Basically, when this goes, the ECU goes into Safe Mode (Closed Loop) and runs the engine rich to prevent detonation.

The lamda sensor is bolted onto the front of your exhaust manifold and can easily be seen under the exhaust manifold cover.

Thank you, for all the replies.

I am going to book the car in for a diagnostic check up and get the error codes deleted, once and for all.

    Thanks once again.
