Changing Downloaded File Type

Hi All, hope someone might be able to understand and help me!

I have downloaded a 7 part file. The instructions were to download from rapidshare then rename the file and put .rar at the end, and then unpack it. I download all parts and they show up as a .elm file that shows as a Microsoft Office Themes File. When I rename it and put .rar at the end, the file hasn't changed to a winrar file? If I right click onto it, there's no extract option.
Does anyone know what I need to do to get this working?

try right clicking and "open with" then select winrar as the program.

cheers chocman, thats about the only think I hadn't done. I was instructed to change the file name and was focused on doing that. I was told to go to the windows tools tab, click on folder options, then view and to make sure show hidden files and folders are on! Not that this allowed me to change the file sort!
