Default Hi All - New to Boards and Scanners - PLEASE HELP....

I know that everyones circumstances are different, but I am new to all this scanning. I would like to buy a scanner to listen to my local (I live in Neath, South Wales) fire brigade, ambulance service, Air, CB , taxi's and shopshare? shemes. I haven't got a lot of money to buy one. Would anyone be kind enough as to recommend some please? (and where to purchase them from) I would like to start with an ' Home base scanner', What kind of antenna would you recommend too please. 'I live in an urban area, with quite a lot of mountains around me). I would like to have a scanner with AM, FM, NFM and WFM (if possible) and side bands? (what are side bands? - I have just heard that someone has them on theirs).

Sorry for ranting on! I'd appreciate ALL advice, please could explain you explain it to me in 'amature style?' Thank you.

P.s I was on the CB years ago, (I'd love to return to that and all, one day - Wife permitting Lol). But i have forgotten all the lingo for that too.

    Hey,

What kind of budget do you have?

Best type of homebase aerial would be a discone (preferably mounted on your roof or in the loft - higher up the better)

Have a look on ebay, theres a whole section of scanners, probably your best bet for picking up a bargain.

    p.s

CB is pretty dead these days not really how it used to be, alot quieter.

It dosent matter your budget is, get the best arial & mount it as high as possible. this will give you much better signal reception and longer range.

I sold my scanner just last week (yupiteru mvt-7100) and the reason i sold it was because there wasnt really much to listen too unless your into aircraft, ambulance and fire was still there and *cough*cordless phones*cough* but for how much longer is anyones guess, you wont really need SSB if you just want to listen to what you listed just AM:FM:WFM will do you, I used to own a Realistic PRO 2042 a few years ago which was in fairness a really good homebase scanner.
I still got a list of aircraft frequencies i had stored if you want me to post them at anytime, they are quit active too.
